What a crazy day of baseball. From Joey Votto and Adam Wainwright turning back the clocks to Corbin Burnes making history. It was truly something to watch. You can read about all of these players below but I want to focus on a few other pitchers. Alek Manoah was also masterful, allowing two runs over 6.2 innings with 11 strikeouts. The whiffs have been massive for Manoah, much like his frame. The next step in his progression will be limiting the walks and fly balls but between him, Shane McClanahan, and Logan Gilbert, I feel great about that next wave of starting pitchers.
The other name I wanted to quickly highlight at the top was Frankie Montas. He turned in another quality start with six strikeouts and 17 swinging strikes on Wednesday. What was most impressive was that he struggled early, throwing nearly 30 pitches in the first inning. We've seen those starts snowball for Montas in the past where things just get away from him. That wasn't the case. He buckled down and bounced back. Over his past six starts, he has a 2.42 ERA with a 19% swinging strike rate. If you held on, kudos to you.
Of course, as always, you can follow to make sure you get the latest episodes of Fantasy Baseball Today right when they drop on Apple and Spotify.
Is Bellinger back?!
Dodgers 1B Cody Bellinger has been one of Fantasy Baseball's biggest disappointments in 2021 but it's obvious that injuries have played a key factor in this. The former sure-fire Fantasy first-round pick is starting to show signs of life. On Wednesday, Bellinger dropped a double dong in helping Los Angeles win 8-2. Bellinger went opposite field (not common for him) after a 13-pitch at bat for his first home run. It was an incredible at bat. The first four months were terrible for Bellinger and they included a 46-game stretch where he didn't play, but he now has hit four home runs in his past four games.
Votto can't stop, won't stop
Reds 1B Joey Votto is without a doubt the single best waiver wire pickup of the 2021 season and at this point he's proving to be one of the best hitters in Fantasy. On Wednesday, Votto was cooking yet again with another double donger. Votto also collected another four hits going 4 for 5 with two home runs. He now has 25 homers on the season and leads all hitters with 14 in the second half of the season! Overall, he's now batting .285 with a .958 OPS. He's now done this for a two-month span.
The debate is now how high can we rank Votto? I'm toying with the idea of ranking him as the fifth-best 1B for the rest of the season. I feel like he deserves it, but Chris disagrees. Towers has moved him up but only to his eighth-best 1B, behind the likes of Jose Abreu. He's also keeping Pete Alonso ahead of him. Regardless, moving into the top-10 is a big glow up for Votto.
Votto's preseason ADP was outside the top-400 picks.
Feeling the Burnes
Remember a month ago when there were concerns over dips in Brewers SP Corbin Burnes' spin rates and if he was soon to fall off a cliff? It's time to quell those concerns as Burnes continues to deliver in a big way. Burnes made MLB history on Wednesday night by becoming just the third pitcher to ever strike out 10 batters in a row. He joined Aaron Nola and Tom Seaver as the only other two to ever do it!
Burnes finished a dominant outing against the Cubs with eight shutout innings allowing four hits and zero walks. He struck out a whopping 15 batters in total with a laughably-dominant 30 swinging strikes induced on 99 pitches. The cutter was filthy as usual; he induced 15 swinging strikes with that pitch alone. He had a 51% CSW rate on Wednesday and the league average is 28%. More than half of his pitches were called strikes -- that's simply unheard of.
More news and notes
  • Dodgers OF Mookie Betts was officially placed back on the IL with that hip injury. He'll head back to LA for additional tests.
  • Cardinals SP Jake Flaherty is scheduled to return from the 60-day IL to start Friday's game against the Royals. He's been out since May with a severe oblique sprain.
  • White Sox SP Carlos Rodon was placed on the IL with left shoulder fatigue and Tony La Russa indicated Rodon could miss more than the minimum time. Reynaldo Lopez made a spot start Wednesday, going three shutout with four strikeouts. He's pitched 20 innings this season with a 1.35 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, 22 K to just 5 BB, scrapped the changeup, mostly FB/SL, mixes in a curve. He is 3% rostered.
  • Brewers RP Josh Hader is set to make his return Thursday.
  • Angels 1B Jared Walsh made his return Wednesday. He was batting third and playing first base.
  • Phillies OF Andrew McCutchen returned and hit cleanup Wednesday.
  • Tigers OF Akil Baddoo was placed on the 7-day concussion IL after that nasty collision Tuesday.

  • White Sox C Yasmani Grandal began a rehab assignment at Double-A Wednesday.
  • Giants 3B Evan Longoria is expected to return from the 60-day IL this weekend. He's 33% rostered and has awesome Statcast numbers: .288 xBA, .562 xSLG.
  • Tanner Houck is expected to be recalled and start Thursday for the Red Sox. With Garrett Richards being moved to the bullpen, it seems like the team might finally leave Houck in this role. In 25.2 IP this season, he has a 2.45 ERA with 12.6 K/9 and is just 39% rostered.
  • Red Sox OF Kyle Schwarber could begin a rehab assignment Thursday.
  • Giants SP Johnny Cueto was placed on the IL with a right flexor strain.
  • Blue Jays SP Ross Stripling went to the IL with an oblique strain.
  • Braves C Travis d'Arnaud returned and was batting seventh. He finished 1 for 4 with a walk and a strikeout.
  • Yankees 3B Gio Urshela has been shut down after he received a PRP injection.
  • Marlins OF Jesus Sanchez began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Wednesday and promptly hit a home run. He's been on the COVID IL since mid July.
What year is it anyway?
Wednesday's action was so jam-packed with flashes from the past that it took us back to the 2010 season when Votto, who hit a double dong, won the NL MVP award. Other oddities aligned with what we saw from the 2010 season including Miguel Cabrera hitting his 499th career home run.
And how about Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright? He delivered a two-hit shutout against the Pirates and didn't walk a single batter while racking up seven strikeouts. Of course, he only induced five swinging strikes on 88 pitches -- and 2010 Wainwright almost certainly induced a lot more -- but he was absolutely unhittable in this one. Don't look now but Wainwright's ERA is now down to 3.27 and he has a 1.06 WHIP. Wainwright has delivered five straight quality starts of at least seven innings. I have moved him all the way up to SP44 in points formats -- ahead of Dylan Cease, Jon Gray and Zac Gallen.
More blasts from the past? Well Buster Posey hit his 15th dinger and Elvis Andrus had a sock and a shoe (his third homer and 10th bag of the season).
Back in 2010, in addition to Votto winning the MVP, Wainwright finished second in Cy Young voting, Miggy finished second in MVP voting, Posey won Rookie of the Year and Andrus was an All Star.
