A new guide by Mozilla outlines how tech builders can give people and communities greater power over how their data is collected, processed, and shared. Zooming in on Germany, India, Kenya, and the United States, ‘Is that even legal? A guide for builders experimenting with data governance’ examines existing laws and regulations to see what alternative approaches are possible. Alternative data governance options covered include: - Establishing a trustworthy data intermediary, for example, for reproductive health data in a post-Roe v. Wade United States;
- Using the EU’s new Data Governance Act to advance data altruism in Germany;
- Creating a data commons in India to hold electricity suppliers accountable; and
- Pooling data to improve Nairobi’s transportation system.
The bottom line? We don't need to wait for regulators to act, anyone collecting data can change their practices, and we created a how-to guide for the different approaches that can be used.
