Good morning, folks. Welcome to the Tuesday, Sept. 10 edition of the Saints Insider newsletter. We hope you stay safe with a potential hurricane approaching. With that in mind, we've got a lot to talk about — including the Saints' electric new-look offense. Let's dive in. Locked in The Saints' 47 points in their season opening win over the Carolina Panthers were the most in the NFL in Week 1. And so with such an impressive performance, our Jeff Duncan took a closer look at what stood out when he rewatched the game. Dunc's top takeaway? "Give a game ball to the offensive line," Duncan wrote. "The much-maligned front five was dominant in the trenches and controlled the line of scrimmage for four quarters." I completely agree. And for more on the offensive line, check out Luke Johnson's recap of Taliese Fuaga's first game. Kamara's usageFor our next day follow, I went in-depth on how Klint Kubiak used running back Alvin Kamara. Of all the things that stood out about the Saints' offense under Kubiak, the way he was able to use Kamara compared to past years was striking. And the running back also deserves credit for showing he still has that kind of explosiveness eight years into his career. There are some eye-opening stats in there, particularly how Kubiak relied on motion to unlock Kamara and the run game. The Saints' 49 plays with pre-snap motion were more than they had in any game under former coordinator Pete Carmichael last year. Contingency plans Like the rest of us, Saints coach Dennis Allen is keeping an eye on the weather. He told reporters Monday that the team would be monitoring Tropical Storm Francine's path and see if any action is needed. "I think we probably do this better than anyone else in the National Football League, so we’ll figure it out,” Allen said. The Saints are on the road this weekend when they face the Dallas Cowboys. Other headlines 🗞️ Rod Walker accurately notes just how important the Saints' season opener win was for quarterback Derek Carr. 🗞️ Tyrann Mathieu played less than half the snaps against the Panthers. What was up with that? We found out. 🗞️ Tom Brady will be calling Sunday's Saints-Cowboys game for Fox. Anyway, that's all for now. Stay safe out there. Take care, Matthew Paras |
