But thanks to high-tech techniques like global illumination, physics simulation, and 3D effects, they take an incredibly long time to render. There’s actually a term for the tendency of animated sequels to take longer to render than their predecessors: Shrek’s Law. The first Shrek film, which came out in 2001, took 5 million CPU render hours. Compare that to 2010’s “Shrek Forever After,” which took over 50 million CPU render hours. We don’t even know how to start explaining that enormous number. |
