TOP OF THE AGENDA | Trump's tariffs raise recession fears |
|
| | Uncertainty around the tariffs led to a turbulent day on global stock markets. Credit: Reuters | US markets have recorded another sharp drop at opening, following the trend of Asian and European stocks that are still reeling from US President Donald Trump's new tariffs regime. Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, who backed Trump's campaign, has now warned of "a self-induced, economic nuclear winter", but the president is not backing down. Trump has threatened China with additional 50% tariffs if it doesn’t withdraw its retaliatory levy. But does turmoil in the markets mean we could be heading for a global recession? Simon Jack takes a look. |

| Gazans tell of torture in Israeli prisons | | The men, who were all arrested after the 7 October 2023 attacks, say they were accused of having links with Hamas. | Palestinian detainees released back to Gaza as part of a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas have told the BBC they were subjected to mistreatment and torture at the hands of the Israeli military and prison staff. The Israel Defense Forces did not respond to any of the specific allegations, but said it "completely rejects accusations of systematic abuse of detainees". The Israel Prison Service said it was not aware of any of the claims of abuse described in its prisons. Warning: This story contains images and details some readers may find disturbing. |

| | The five released Palestinian detainees all described the same pattern - being arrested in Gaza, taken into Israel to be detained first in military barracks before being moved on to prison, and finally released back to Gaza months later. They said they had been abused at every stage of the process.
Mechanic Mohammad Abu Tawileh told us he had been tortured for days. Soldiers mixed chemicals used for cleaning into a pot, he told us, and dunked his head in them. The interrogators then punched him, he said, and he fell to the rubble-strewn floor, injuring his eye. He said they then covered his eye with a cloth, which he said "worsened his injury". They also set him alight, he told us. |

And finally... in the US | A pair of giant tortoises have become first-time parents at Philadelphia Zoo at the age of about 100. Abrazzo and Mommy are a pair of Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoises, which are critically endangered in the wild - fewer than 50 are kept in US zoos. The four hatchlings are currently being kept behind-the-scenes, but the zoo has shared a picture of one of them. Take a look. | |
