Andy Gill was a lifer.
When he was forced to cancel Gang Of Four's Australian tour last year due to illness, he had rescheduled the dates before we even knew anything was up.
When he was on his deathbed late last week, he was making plans for his band's next tour.
Gang Of Four were one of those bands that always deserved to be bigger given the extent of their influence, but the trailblazers rarely get the mainstream recognition of which they are worthy.
I met Andy on one occasion. I was nervous. I figured he'd be a pretty grumpy guy, and he kinda was. But he was also very considered and very happy to talk about music, about his legacy and about the future. Speaking to him was an enriching experience.
Do you think you'll be as passionate about what you do in 43 years' time as you are now? Because I'm certain Andy was.
At just 64, Andy Gill died too young. But given the life he led, the boundaries he pushed, the influence he imparted and the fact he never gave up – even though the rest of his original band had years earlier – I'd like to think he was pretty satisfied in his final moments.
His death is a huge loss.
