American politics have been struggling for years with a lack of civility, and it feels as though cultural divides are only becoming more inflamed. Legal scholar Asma Uddin has spent the past year grappling with a pressing question: How can the Supreme Court break free from this divisive paradigm and help heal our deeply fractured nation?
“It’s no secret that America is polarized, and with each new controversial Supreme Court decision, the differences only seem to deepen,” Uddin writes. “But what if the court could play a different role? What if, instead of inflaming our divisions, it could remind us of our shared values and common identity as Americans?
“This isn’t just wishful thinking. It’s an idea with deep roots in legal scholarship.”

Rep. John Curtis has a positive vision for Utah Lake.
Utah Lake has historically been overwhelmed by invasive phragmites, carp and algal blooms, but recent conservation work has shifted the tide. Soon, Curtis hopes the lake will bring beauty and economic development to Utah.
“I get what this lake is and what it can be,” he told participants at the Utah Lake Symposium held Monday at Utah Valley University in Orem and coordinated by the Utah Lake Authority and its research partners.
The Utah Lake Authority hopes to construct a nature center next to the Lindon harbor. Curtis has already secured $5 million in funding for the center, and proponents are hoping for another $15 million in one-time funding from the state Legislature to get the project underway by this fall. Another $2.3 million is being requested in ongoing funding from lawmakers.
