What is R-22?

R-22, also known as Freon or HCFC-22, is used around the world in commercial and residential air conditioning systems, chillers, and industrial applications. As an HCFC (hyrdochlorofluorocarbon), the synthetic chemicals found in R-22 produce emissions that destroy the stratospheric ozone layer, which protects the Earth from ultraviolet radiation. The US Environmental Protection Agency, along with global leaders, agreed to cease production and imports of R-22 at the end of 2019. At that point, servicing systems that contain R-22 will rely on stockpiled inventory or using recycled R-22 recovered from other HVAC systems.

Do you need to replace your systems if they use R-22?

Many factors impact the decision to replace or repair your R-22 HVAC systems. The phase out of R-22 will reduce available supply, this is expected to lead to increased costs for repairs. Eventually, the costs of repairing a system that uses R-22 will outweigh the benefits of keeping it operational. Installing a new system is a significant investment, but improved energy efficiency and minimal repair costs will allow a quicker ROI (return on investment).

What should you do next?

Per the EPA:

“The most important thing you can do is to maintain your unit properly. Appropriate servicing minimizes potential environmental damage and maintenance costs.”

Looking ahead, we recommend working with the Haller Enterprises' team of experts to create a multi-year plan to replace your R-22 systems. This will ensure that your HVAC equipment (assets) are compliant with the federal regulations and allow you to work the investments into your capital budget for the upcoming years. The team at Haller is familiar with the most recent depreciation and tax incentives available when purchasing new HVAC equipment.
