Graduation automation: Commencement in the age of COVID-19For the Class of 2020, the year could not have gone worse. Not only did the COVID-19 pandemic force students across the country to shelter indoors and take classes online, but the capstone to their college experience is also now canceled indefinitely, with no ceremonies or rites of passage taking place in person. But Arizona State University isn’t taking this lying down and is giving its newest set of graduates a chance to enjoy commencement ceremonies with the help of some unusual robots. These bots look like Segways with iPads glued to the top, and that’s more or less how they function. On the screen, however, is a real-time view of a graduate’s face, and the graduates themselves are able to navigate the robot remotely through their internet connection. Now, the disappointed Class of 2020 has an opportunity to be the first class ever to graduate with robotic assistance. It’s a tradeoff, for sure, but it’s one for the history books! In any case, this is a much better approach to “robots with human faces” than previous attempts. Tap or click here to see what it’s like to go on a date with a humanoid robot. → |
