| Hello. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) "failed in its mission to protect Israeli civilians", according to the military’s first official account of what led to its failures during Hamas's 7 October 2023 attack. Ahead of Sunday's Oscars, Tokyo correspondent Shaimaa Khalil looks into why a nominated film featuring Japan’s MeToo icon can't be viewed in the country. TOP OF THE AGENDA | Israel's military failed to protect civilians, first report on 7 October attack says |
| | About 1,200 people were killed when Hamas attacked Israeli communities, military bases and a music festival on 7 October 2023. Credit: EPA | The Israeli military "failed in its mission to protect civilians", a report into the mistakes which led to Hamas's 7 October attack has found. It highlights, amongst other points, an assumption that Hamas was "neither interested [in] nor preparing for a large-scale war", and that an assessment that the armed group's plan was not merely a vision but "a concrete framework for operational planning" was not brought to the attention of senior officials. Hamas killed around 1,200 people in its attack and took 251 hostages. In response, Israel launched an air and ground campaign in Gaza, during which at least 48,365 people have been killed, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry, and much of the enclave flattened. |
| | | - Warnings unheard: Known as Israel's "eyes on the border", young Israeli conscripts passed on information in the run-up to the attack but the military "didn't connect the dots".
- Six hours at hands of Hamas: Israeli accounts reveal how a border base fell on 7 October.

BEYOND THE HEADLINES | Japan's MeToo icon is up for an Oscar - but the film can't air in the country |
| | | Shiori Ito has become the face of Japan's MeToo movement. Credit: Getty Images | "I'm scared… but all I want to do is to talk about the truth", Shiori Ito says in the opening scene of her Oscar-nominated documentary Black Box Diaries, which tells the story of her rape allegations. When she went public with her claims she became the face of Japan's MeToo movement. Yet viewers in the country can't watch the film after it ran into huge controversy. There's been no official explanation why the documentary hasn't been distributed and it's unclear how much is due to legal hurdles. Shiori however, believes"Japan is still not ready to talk about [it]". |
