| Hello. Today my colleagues in Jerusalem are reporting on the ongoing Israeli operation in the occupied West Bank. There has been frequent raids in the territory since 7 October, but it is the first time in decades that multiple cities are targeted simultaneously. In Italy, Mark Lowen looks back on the 16 minutes it took for the Bayesian luxury yacht to sink, killing seven people. Also in your newsletter: open mics and Bible bottles. | |

TOP OF THE AGENDA | Israel launches major West Bank operation | | Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. | A major Israeli military operation is under way in the occupied West Bank, where at least nine Palestinians have been killed according to Palestinian health officials. Israeli authorities say they are carrying out "a counter-terrorism operation", in which at least four cities, including Jenin and Tulkarm, are targeted simultaneously. Israel's Foreign Minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday night the operation aimed to dismantle "Iranian-Islamic terror infrastructures". An escalation of the violence in the West Bank will lead to "dire and dangerous results for which everyone will pay the price", a spokesperson for the Palestinian presidency said. Violence has increased in the West Bank over the past year: at least 600 Palestinians have been killed in the territory since Hamas' deadly attacks on 7 October triggered the war in Gaza. "We’ve been to Jenin during Israeli military operations many times in the past 10 months," writes Middle East correspondent Lucy Williamson, "but the scale of what’s happening here now feels different."
The latest: Israeli troops are stationed around the Jenin Government Hospital, where the operation is still ongoing, according to a local journalist. Our live page has more.
In Gaza: Satellite pictures show part of Gaza's coastline turning brown as health experts warn of the spread of open sewage from overcrowded camps.
In the Red Sea: An oil tanker which was attacked by Yemen's Houthi rebels last week is still on fire and may be leaking oil, the US Pentagon says.

| | At about 04:15 local time, Fabio Cefalù – a fisherman who had been due to go out that wild Monday morning but, like others, decided against it – suddenly saw a flare go up. He changed his mind and went out to sea to find out what was going on – and discovered only cushions and floating planks of wood. A luxury super yacht called the Bayesian, moored only a few hundred metres away, had already sunk. |

BEYOND THE HEADLINES | Harris campaign wants an open mic night |
|
| | | US presidential campaigns are still wrangling over debate logistics. Credit: Getty Images | Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are set to meet on 10 September for the second US presidential debate. In the first face-off, between Mr Trump and Joe Biden, microphones were muted when it was the other person's turn to speak - a request from Democrats to avoid interruptions. But now, Harris' team wants to reverse the rule, while Republicans want to keep it. |

And finally... | Many a light-hearted news item has centred on a message in a bottle washing up decades after being cast into water by a faraway youngster. But in recent years, thousands of bottles containing Bible verses have washed up on the banks of the River Bann, in Northern Ireland. It raised the ire of environmental campaigners, who demanded it end. And it seems their pleas have been heard - but by who, no-one is sure. Catherine Morrison looks into the mystery.
