Israel's Pricey Challenge

Israel has recently been ranked as the country with the highest cost of living among developed nations, as per data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Their study showed that prices in Israel were 38% above the average of OECD member countries. Factors contributing to this include a significant concentration in sectors like food and household goods, with a single supplier controlling about 12% of the food market in 2020. Basic consumer goods such as milk, bread, and cheese in Israel are priced 50% to 70% higher than the average in OECD countries. The Israel Democracy Institute's survey highlighted the public's concern, with most respondents blaming government inaction for the rising costs.

In a significant archaeological find, a 300-meter segment of an aqueduct from the Second Temple era was recently discovered in Jerusalem's Givat HaMatos neighborhood. This is the longest continuous stretch of such an aqueduct found in the city. The Israeli Antiquities Authority highlighted the aqueduct's historical importance, noting its role in supplying water to ancient Jerusalem's growing population. The aqueducts, constructed under Hasmonean King Herod, ingeniously utilized gravity to transport water from springs near Bethlehem to Jerusalem. Jerusalem's Mayor, Moshe Lion, emphasized the city's blend of history and future, assuring that future developments in Givat HaMatos would respect and preserve this archaeological treasure.

Israeli athletes have been making significant strides on the global stage, bringing immense pride to their nation. Recently, the Israeli karate team showcased their exceptional skills at the SKIF Shotokan Karate World Games in Hungary, securing six gold, one silver, and four bronze medals. Marathoner Maru Teferi made history by winning a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships, marking Israel's first medal in the men's marathon category. Additionally, the U21 World Windsurfing Championships in Switzerland saw Israeli sailor Adi Millo clinch a bronze medal. The Allianz Sailing World Championships in The Netherlands was another highlight, with Israeli windsurfers Shahar Tibi and Katy Spychakov winning gold and silver medals respectively. Furthermore, Team Israel shone at the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships, winning the nation's first group all-around gold medal.
