TOP OF THE AGENDA | Two Israeli embassy staff shot dead outside Washington DC Jewish museum |
|
| | A statement from the embassy said the victims were "in the prime of their life". Credit: Embassy of Israel to the USA | A young couple who worked for the Israeli embassy have been shot dead outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington DC. The Israeli ambassador said Yaron Lischinsky was planning to propose to his girlfriend, Sarah Lynn Milgrim, in Jerusalem next week and had brought a ring. The suspect - 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez - shouted "free, free Palestine" when he was taken into custody, police say, adding that officers will "look into ties to potential terrorism". While officials in Israel have blamed antisemitism for the killings, many have also linked it to recent global criticism of Israel’s conduct of the Gaza war, writes Middle East correspondent Yolande Knell. |

| BEYOND THE HEADLINES | How a joke about rice cost a Japanese cabinet minister his job |
|
| | | Taku Eto's comments that he never had to buy rice caused outrage. Credit: Reuters | Japan's first cost-of-living crisis in decades is hitting a beloved staple: rice. The price has more than doubled in the last year, and imported varieties are few and far between. So when the country's farm minister tried to make a joke about rice, it fell so flat that he was forced to resign. |

And finally... in China | Hundreds of tiles have fallen from the roof of a centuries-old tower in China's Anhui province, smashing to the ground near visitors to the site. The Drum Tower - reportedly the largest in China - was built in 1375 during the Ming Dynasty and had undergone an extensive rebuild in 1995. Eyewitness footage showed sections of the roof collapsing. | |
