Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., plans to build a $30 million Junior-Senior Village and has raised $10 million toward that end. Some small- and medium-sized businesses are turning to alternative financing such as merchant cash advances and are relying on credit cards for payments, says Charles Zhu, vice president of product at data intelligence platform Enigma. "The big story continues to be that people are not using cash as much -- we're not going back to what cash percentages looked like before, and payment processors are playing an increasingly and accordingly important role in the SMB economy," Zhu says.

A US Federal Reserve review of the issues leading up to Silicon Valley Bank's failure earlier this year concludes that the supervisory process was slow to respond to the bank's rapid growth and high levels of interest rate risk dating back to 2019. The report notes that Fed supervisors "did not want to appear to pull forward large bank standards to smaller banks."
