OCTOBER 21, 2024

Good morning, reader. We know you're receiving this much earlier in the day than usual. We're trying something new out over the next few days to see if you prefer waking up to us in the morning as opposed to hearing from us in the afternoon. Let's see how this goes. Thanks for being patient with us.

It’s time to bust out your cozy flannel and camera — fall foliage is here. Plus:

The Best Leaf-Peeping Destinations Across North America to Visit This Season

Nothing says fall quite like changing leaves. While many of the season’s charms (cozy sweaters, apple picking and pumpkin spice lattes) are, no doubt, available close to home, Mother Nature’s most vibrant displays erupt in various pockets of the country.

Travelers keen to book a leafy getaway still have time to make it happen. The window to glimpse crimson, gold and amber extends through late October and even into early November in certain areas. (Pro tip: consult this foliage forecast map to time your trip to peak fall colors.)

Some of the best spots to soak in all the brilliant colors might even be closer than you realize. (Road trip or train ride, anyone?) Others are well worth hopping on a flight for an eyeful of flaming hues.

From fan favorites like Aspen and Stowe to less-flocked-to spots such as Coeur d’Alene, these are the best leaf-peeping destinations across North America to visit this season.

Yesterday, we asked if you indulge in a morning beer while traveling. You said:

  • I haven't before, but I will now! (16%)
  • I love a beer while traveling, but not in the morning (19%)
  • I usually opt for a different drink (24%)
  • There's nothing like a morning beer while traveling (41%)

Why Are Some Men Obsessed With Waking Up Super Early?

In an interview with Axios a few years ago, Apple CEO Tim Cook explained why he gets up at 3:45 a.m. “I like to take the first hour and go through user comments and things that sort of focus on the external people that are so important to us,” he said. “And then I go to the gym and work out for an hour because it keeps my stress at bay.”

The average American wakes up at 7:09 in the morning. By that point, Cook has already put in an hour of work — according to Finty, he wakes up to over 700 fresh emails a morning — an hour of working out and grabbed a cup of coffee en route to the office. He’s a Starbucks guy.

We love this sort of stuff. Right? It doesn’t really matter where it’s coming from. We’re always game for a “successful person got ahead by getting up a little earlier than everyone else” yarn. It’s an arms race of sorts, to see who can wake up as close to yesterday as possible.

Review: Johnnie Walker Gets the Après Ski Treatment

What we’re drinking: Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ice Chalet

Where it’s from: Founded in 1820, Johnnie Walker is the world’s best-selling Scotch whisky. This new bottle is a collaboration with the luxury skiwear brand Perfect Moment and the second drop in a series of limited edition whiskies (the Cobalt series).

Why we’re drinking this: An Après Ski-themed whisky? Sure, why not? We were fans of last year’s Johnnie Walker Blue Label Elusive Umami release — a collaboration between Johnnie Walker Master Blender Emma Walker and Chef Kei Kobayashi (of the three Michelin-star Paris restaurant Kei) — so we were game to try something equally unique from the iconic Scotch blenders. According to the brand, Ice Chalet is inspired by the “blue hour,” or the moment between sunset and twilight on the slopes when skiing is done and everyone starts socializing.
