When we met our German Shepherd, Kane, for the first time, we weren't sure what to expect. Kane was a rescue; his previous owners could no longer take care of him since they were downsizing to an apartment. They gave him to an organization that specialized in pairing dogs with combat veterans dealing with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

My husband is a retired Marine who was part of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. After his third tour, he was diagnosed with severe PTSD. His therapist thought that a service dog would be beneficial to him so that he could have someone else besides me to help him deal with nightmares and the stress of being outside our home.
