What you need to know

  • Utah officially gets the 2034 Olympics. The International Olympic Committee voted in Paris on Wednesday to award the 2034 Winter Games to the state. Their long-awaited decision followed a half-hour presentation showcasing plans for what will add up to a $4 billion event built on the success of the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a statement offering “heartfelt congratulations” and pledging to work with Olympic organizers.

Utah business incentives program achieves record successes in FY 2024

The Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity announced today that Utah-based businesses continued to perform and further invest in the state during the 2024 fiscal year (FY 2024). Utah’s average capital expenditure per project rose this fiscal year compared to typical years due to increased investments in strategically targeted industries such as Aerospace and Defense, Information Technology, and Advanced Manufacturing. From July 2023 to June 2024, 20 companies participated in the state’s board-approved tax credit program and are collectively projected to create 8,549 new jobs, make $2.4 billion in new capital investments, pay $539 million in new state tax revenue, and provide $6.2 billion in new state wages over the next 20 years. Utah Farm Bureau kicks off its 2024 farmers market season

The Utah Farm Bureau will kick off another market year this weekend, with the opening of the Murray Park Farmers Market. The Utah Farm Bureau started the Murray Park Farmers Market began in 1981 and currently hosts 27 farmers selling a wide variety of products, including peaches, plums, corn and tomatoes.

The Murray Park Farmers Market is the longest continuously running farmers market in the state, and is proud to be a producer-only market. Many of the farmers who attend the market have been doing so since its inception in the 1980s. The South Jordan Farmers Market will start Aug. 4, next to City Hall in South Jordan. (Read More)


USBE seeking public feedback on Utah’s Core Standards

The Utah State Board of Education (USBE) is seeking feedback from educators, parents, students, and other interested community members on Utah’s Core Standards. Those interested in providing feedback are welcome to do so through the 2024 Annual Core Standards survey. The 2024 Annual Core Standards survey will be open for 30 days, from July 23 to August 23, 2024. The survey results are expected to be reported to the Standards and Assessment Committee on September 6, 2024. (Read More)

On This Day In History

  • 1862 - Martin Van Buren, 8th US President (1837-41), dies of heart failure at 79
  • 1892 - Alice Ball is born. Alice Ball developed the first successful treatment for Hansen’s disease, aka leprosy. As the first African American graduate with an M.S. degree from the College of Hawaii, Ball began her career there teaching chemistry. Shortly after her discovery of an effective treatment, Alice died at the age of 24 and was unable to publish her findings. The president of the university continued Alice’s work, publishing the findings as his own, without giving credit to her.
  • 1897 - Amelia Earhart is born. Noted aviation pioneer and author, she was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic and the first person to fly solo across the Pacific from Hawaii to the mainland. She disappeared doing what she loved.
  • 1911 - Machu Picchu “discovered” by American archeologist Hiram Bingham
  • 1920 - Bella Abzug is born. A lawyer, political activist and U.S. Congressional Representative from New York (1973-77), she initiated the proposal for Women’s Equality Day
  • 1954 - American social activist Mary Eliza Church Terrell dies. She co-founded the National Association of Colored Women and was its first president. She focused her work on civil rights and desegregation. 
  • 1972 - A D.C. newspaper exposes an ongoing 40-year syphilis experiment that withheld diagnosis information and treatment from Black men in Alabama to study the disease's effects.
