Dear Reader,
To work in the Forward's newsroom is to be surrounded by our inspirational history. One of my favorite artifacts actually sits right here in my own office: the desk used by our bold and visionary founding editor, Ab Cahan. That desk, where Cahan created the first issues of what would become a powerful force of American media, now holds baby photos of my twins — my own symbols of the American Jewish future.
To me, on the eve of the Forward's 125th anniversary, this is the perfect representation of what we're celebrating: the meeting of our extraordinary past and our exciting future. As the Forward’s Editor-in-Chief, I couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve accomplished — growing in multitudes while staying true to our roots. Through unbridled news reporting, unabashed cultural coverage, and uncompromised engagement with the great diversity of Jewish life, the Forward has adapted, evolved, and innovated to remain America’s leading independent Jewish news organization. "The Forverts changes. But our mission never does, for it belongs to you." The Forward thrives because it is reader-supported. As we continue to innovate, meet the challenges of the digital landscape, and invest in new voices in Jewish journalism, will you join me in celebrating 125 years of the Forward by making a gift to support our work? When the cornerstone was laid at the historic Forward building in Lower Manhattan, our founding editor Abraham Cahan told readers, “The Forverts changes. But our mission never does, for it belongs to you.” More than a century later, his words still ring true: None of our work would be possible without you, our community of readers.
Whether you’ve been with us for decades or just recently subscribed, you are the reason we do everything we do. Thank you for making the Forward what it is today. Here’s to another 125 years.
In celebration, ![]() Jodi Rudoren Editor-in-Chief, The Forward
