The Intersection Between Manzanar and Water Rights
| At the foot of the majestic snow-capped Sierras are the contrasting remains of Manzanar, a concentration camp for Japanese Americans during World War II, and memories of the Indigenous nations — the Nüümü (Paiute) and the Newe (Shoshone) — who were violently removed from Payahuunadü, the now-parched “land of flowing water.” Since the U.S. Army arrived, the flowing water of the valley has been taken and diverted to cities like Los Angeles.
The documentary Manzanar, Diverted: When Water Becomes Dust, highlights the intersectionality between the forced removal of Native Americans, the incarceration of Japanese Americans and environmentalism. Watch the premiere on Monday, July 18, at 10pm on KQED 9.
