Where NOLA Eats

Happy Wednesday, New Orleans food fans! It must be Italian week. Authentic Jersey-style subs are coming to an Italian deli Uptown, and we get word of a new Italian restaurant opening on Magazine Street. The old Cavan space will be a restaurant again ... for real this time. We remember a former chef and manager from Galatoire's. A city ordinance bans sugary soft drinks with kids' meals. And we have a shortcut for a fancy, French-style king cake you can make yourself.

1. Sandwich generation?

In a town that loves its po-boys, Tara Francolini is betting there's room for another kind of sandwich: authentic Italian subs from her new deli (motto: "Not everything from Jersey sucks").

2. World cuisine on Magazine.

Expect house-made pasta and dishes out of a wood-fired oven at Osteria Lupo, a new Magazine Street restaurant from the partners at Costera, based on northern Italian cooking.

3. Wait! There's more.

The building that once housed Cavan looked like it was back in business, but that was all for show: Here's what's coming. A former chef and manager at Galatoire's, Leon Galatoire, has passed away at 68. And kids' meals won't come with a sugary soft drink any more under a city ordinance.

4. King cake, your way.

Starting King's Day, Jan. 6, dozens of different varieties of king cake will be on offer all around New Orleans. But if you really want to make one yourself, it's doable, and there's even a shortcut. Check out Judy Walker's recipe for French-style king cake here.

That's it for the food newsletter, but in New Orleans, the food news never stops. Keep up with all the inside info on Where NOLA Eats.
