WALDOBORO: Waldoboro's most famous food exports are likely the sauerkraut and pickles made by the barrelful at Morse's Sauerkraut, a market founded decades ago by German immigrants. But for a truly one-of-a-kind culinary ingredient, look no further than the Waldoboro green neck turnip, a variety of rutabaga which, according to legend, washed ashore in Waldoboro in 1886, like a gift from the sea gods to the land gods. It's grown today by a handful of farms in midcoast Maine, and is praised for its size and mildly spicy flavor.
