Question of the Week

Why did you go to law school?

At a career fair last week, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan told an audience that she went to law school for the wrong reasons.

As dean of Harvard Law School, she remembers telling attendees at an admitted student weekend: "Well, you shouldn't go to law school unless you really want to go to law school. You shouldn't go to law school because you can't think of anything better to do or because it will keep your options open …"

She continued, “Then I sort of stopped myself in the middle, because I thought to myself, ‘I think that’s why you went to law school.’”

But Kagan said she was lucky—once she got to law school, she loved it.

So this week we’d like to ask you: Why did you go to law school? Are you glad you went? Have you ended up with the legal career you envisioned when you accepted your law school spot, or are you doing something totally different?
