With a photographic career stretching over four decades, she documented pivotal underground movements from the early stages of the punk and hip-hop scene to recent movements like Black Lives Matter. Rebels: An Ode to Subversives, Revolutionaries and Provocateurs sheds light on themes such as social justice, political activism, and youth culture. Beckman is considered one of the most prominent photographers of the London punk scene during the 1970s and ‘80s. Her portraits of legendary groups such as The Clash, The Sex Pistols, and The Jam were often featured in influential magazines such as The Face and Melody Maker. In the early 1980s Beckman moved to New York, where she documented the rising hip-hop scene and its pioneers such as Salt-N-Pepa, Slick Rick and LL Cool J. Her photographs capture the raw energy and essence of the artists and have shaped the way we see these music cultures today. | | | | | | Punks, Sid Vicious Memorial March, London, 1979 © Janette Beckman | | | | Beyond her contribution to music cultures, the exhibition pays homage to rebels who challenge social and political norms, showcasing her photographs of recent movements such as Black Lives Matter, Anti-Trump protests, and peace demonstrations for Gaza. Furthermore, the exhibition explores how Beckman’s photographs have influenced brands, highlighting her campaigns for renowned brands such as Dior, Kangol and the shoot for Gucci x Dapper Dan. The exhibition, Rebels, serves as a tribute to some of the most important social movements and subcultures of recent decades and includes a mix of images, contact sheets, and vinyl covers. | | | | | | Salt-n-Pepa, New York City, 1987 © Janette Beckman | | | | Janette Beckman (b. 1959) is a British American photographer, currently residing in New York, known for her work on subcultures. The topics of interest range from migration to the danger of internet algorithms, and from questioning gender roles to a reflection on the impact of colonialism. Looking to broaden the medium of photography, this year’s talents present us with innovative approaches, from embroideries on photos and the use of photogrammetry to the use of Artificial Intelligence. The selection celebrates photographers who dare to push the boundaries of creative expression. | | | | | | Mayisa, uzaklar mi sana bakiyorsen mi uzaklara? from the series The Dispossessed, 2019 © Cansu Yıldıran. | | | | In addition to the physical exhibition, Talent 2024-2025 is accompanied by a digital exhibition on the online platform Foam Explore, as well as Foam Magazine #65 TALENT which will be entirely devoted to this new generation of talents. The artistic duo delves into the intricate landscape of radicalization within the online realm and through social media channels. Their comprehensive research project sheds light on the covert use of seemingly innocuous forms of media such as music, videos, and images as coded language for extremist ideologies. Ganslmeier and Zibelnik's exploration reveals how memes and various media formats, initially perceived as harmless, can inadvertently serve as conduits for disseminating extremist messages. | | | | | | Redpilled video still, 2023 © Jakob Ganslmeier & Ana Zibelnik. | | | | In recent years the global surge in right-wing extremism has become increasingly pronounced. The repercussions of this trend are evident in recent elections in The Netherlands, reflecting a growing polarization within our society. Ganslmeier and Zibelnik assert that social media serves as a significant catalyst for this surge, playing a pivotal role in fostering and disseminating extremist ideologies. The exhibition GIGA compellingly exposes the shadows concealed behind the seemingly 'innocent' facade of communication on social media platforms. It elucidates how the sharing of seemingly harmless images, initially perceived as pure entertainment, inadvertently sows the seeds for the germination of extreme right-wing ideologies. The exhibition displays the video projects Redpilled, Public Enlightenment and the artist duo’s latest project Bereitschaft (‘Readiness’), which will be premiering at Foam 3h. Each video work offers an in-depth exploration into the perilous undercurrents of cynical humor and the allure and rationalization of violence that come with the profound influence wielded by iconic meme personas such as Wojak and GigaChad. The new video work, Bereitschaft (‘Readiness’), delves into contemporary TikTok trends that fervently advocate rigorous physical routines, simultaneously urging a return to an outdated ideal of masculinity. This narrative is characterized by a pronounced misogynistic undertone, coupled with imagery invoking notions associated with 'Aryan' ideology. The exhibition's title, GIGA, is borrowed from its prevalent usage across social media platforms, embodying greatness and commanding respect. With the exhibition GIGA, Foam not only aims to illustrate the complexities around the imagery on our social media, but also looks to contribute to the overall media literacy of its users. By fostering awareness regarding the incessant influx of images encountered and shared daily, the exhibition aims to elucidate how this phenomenon gradually allows radical propaganda to permeate and shape our worldview. | | | | | | War room, from the public enlightenment series, 2023 © Jakob Ganslmeier & Ana Zibelnik. | | | | Jakob Ganslmeier (1990, München) is a photographer and visual artist based in The Netherlands.
