JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles presents:

NATURE/SUPERNATURE Exhibit

JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles presents a portal to another world. From the comfort and safety of your own home, we invite you to experience the new exhibition “NATURE/SUPERNATURE – Visions of this World and Beyond in Japanese Woodblock Prints.”

The power and beauty of nature have been a central focus in Japanese culture, as in the belief that supernatural beings—from ghosts to shape-shifting animals to trickster spirits—inhabit and influence the natural realm. For centuries, Japanese artists have illustrated these themes, reaching new heights in the Edo (1603–1868) and Meiji (1868–1912) eras with the rise of woodblock printing, the world’s first form of “mass media.” The exhibition’s three sections feature more than 60 Japanese prints, including work by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) and Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), portraying not only the evolution of woodblock printing techniques, but gorgeous vistas of the Japanese landscape, as well as nature’s fascinating supernatural dimensions.
