There needs to be cross-pollination, joking, playing, interaction — and failure. Command and control is less and less viable today. The creative director of today has to be a symphony conductor.

rantnrave:// Sometimes there’s a union of style, celebrity, pop fandom, and culture that’s just right. The cues don’t come through direct avenues. It’s more intuitive than that. There are no formulas, despite the collisions of brands and business development deals that may claim otherwise. And IMHO, JEAN-CLAUDE VAN DAMME in FLAUNT MAGAZINE wearing GOSHA RUBCHINSKIY and GUCCI loafs at THE PENINSULA in PARIS is Excellent Fashion™. That’s right, Jean-Claude Van Damme, the Muscles from Brussels, star of TIMECOP, BLOODSPORT, KICKBOXER, UNIVERSAL SOLDIER, JCVD, and now JEAN-CLAUDE VAN JOHNSON. I have to call it as I see it. The editorial is a combination of older, wiser martial arts action star, dad style, pure joy derived from action movies, outsider-as-insider fashion, and the thrill of seeing someone with one of the most persevering careers and dedicated international fan bases return to the spotlight. And the styling is great. Crosscurrents of JCVD and fashion have faded in and out over the years, although there was a denim line called DAMMAGE 7 (yes) that despite my best efforts I've been unable to locate. It debuted at HARRODS in 2001. There's a great image of NAOMI CAMPBELL and JCVD hanging at PLANET HOLLYWOOD when that was a thing. And other than some short-lived merch collections, not much has surfaced. I don't know if we'll see more of JCVD as the next fashion ambassador, but I'm 110% here for it if we do… The latest GRAILED 100 is once again a choice selection of, well, grails, from the FW 1996 HELMUT LANG denim jacket to SUPREME's 1998 spoof on a PATAGONIA fleece. As detailed in GQ STYLE, each piece has a story or is tied to a cultural moment, and in that way the Grailed sale is a savvy mix of connoisseurship and hypebeast commerce. "By enthusiasts, for enthusiasts," indeed… Briefs: A list of discrimination cases from THE FASHION LAW... Nice PALACE ad... JUICY COUTURE joins NYFW and POIRET will show in PARIS.

How Does a Bag Become an It Bag?
by Rebecca Jennings
The Chanel 2.55. The Hermès Birkin. The Fendi Baguette. Whatever the It bag of the moment is, its name becomes known far beyond its actual owners. But the reliable cycle of It bags isn't actually a given. Sure, Chanel's famous leather quilted purse with the iconic chain strap dates back to February 1955 (hence the name).

Why luxury brands still hire chief digital officers
by Hilary Milnes
In luxury fashion, the chief digital officer still has a purpose. It's the person who can be brought in to buckle down and mature the brand's digital efforts, and help right ship. At the same time, they signal both internally and externally that real time, energy and money is being invested in digital advancements, and progress is on the horizon.
