The only crisis is when people are insecure. When you are insecure, you stop looking at your own identity, and you look at the identity of other people and what they sell best. It doesn’t mean another person’s bestseller is going to be your bestseller. If you have a strong identity, people will be faithful and come back to you. |

| rantnrave:// H&M has enlisted M.I.A. as the face of their World Recycle Week Garment Collection program. Customers are encouraged to return unwanted garments to H&M for reuse, and participants will be rewarded with a discount on a future purchase. Great that H&M is investing in research aimed at improving textile recycling processes, but can't help but note the irony in a sustainability effort that encourages further consumption... What would be the impact of an H&M-sized company doing away with packaging for in-store purchases?... Thanks to VETEMENTS, a bunch of models, and a toddler of some repute, the THRASHER logo is enjoying what we might call “a moment.” THRASHER, if you didn’t know, is skateboarding's most enduring periodical. In an essay for the CALIFORNIA SUNDAY MAGAZINE, WILLY STALLEY calls it "VOGUE for degenerates,” making long-time editor JAKE PHELPS its de facto ANNA WINTOUR. I opened this piece in a fit of procrastination, but found STALLEY’s description of the vocation of professional skateboarder dovetailing neatly with that of professional model: "You don’t root for skaters; you have taste in skaters. And a professional’s job is to go out and get footage for his sponsors, who put out videos that are both marketing for products and the means by which skateboarding progresses.” Plus: low pay, zero job security, typically short careers. Wish STALLEY had asked PHELPS what he thought of VETEMENTS' THRASHER flip, but based on PHELPS' general disposition, I feel like I have a pretty good idea. | | - Adam Wray, curator |
