Someday, millennials may be horrified when their children want mahogany furniture and doilies and figurines. They may just think it’s horrible. ‘Why would you want that?’ | | A fall look from Kappa Kontroll. | rantnrave:// We know KYLIE JENNER can sell the hell out of lipstick, but did we realize how impactful she is on music, too? "Kylie’s SNAPCHAT has oddly boosted the plays for RUSS, 6LACK, and more, giving her the power of accidental cosigner," writes ETHAN DAVENPORT. I have definitely watched Kylie lip syncing in her car with a friend and thought, "Ooh what’s that song?" I will further admit that I am one of 2,343 people who follows a fan-made SPOTIFY playlist titled "Kylie Jenner’s Fav Songs," 90 tracks culled from Jenner’s social media by some girl named JENNY (thanks, Jenny!). I’m guessing that a lot of people who read this newsletter live in a major city, and it’s easy for us to forget that the millions and millions of people who follow Kylie—and KENDALL, GIGI, BELLA, so on—aren’t exposed to the art, music, and street style one sees in major cities daily. To many followers, Kylie is more than a new beauty standard or a fascinating phenomenon to watch from afar, but a portal of cultural exposure (whether or not you appreciate her brand of "culture")... While American malls crumble, shopping centers are thriving in Mexico... The only vintage millennials aren't into? Furniture... More proof that AMAZON may just be able to crack fashion—or at least apparel. The company quietly launched a handful of private label clothing brands earlier this year, and now sales data is rolling in: One line, a womenswear label called LARK & RO, did $1.9M in the first half of this year. While Amazon still isn't ubiquitous for shopping style online—in the way ASOS and NET-A-PORTER are, for example—what's important here is that customers are slowly warming to the idea of buying clothes on the site. A few months back, I interviewed some folks on the prospect of Amazon Fashion, and the words of MISSION founder and CEO JOSH SHAW ring in my ear every time the company reports good news in its apparel business: "[We] should not have second-guessed [Amazon Fashion], because anything Amazon puts their mind to, they’re very successful.” | | - Nicola Fumo, guest curator |
