There's nothing wrong with being a thinker. Where I'm from, being smart has a negative connotation—that means you sold out, that means you're a geek. I'm just trying to say, 'F*** all that. This is the plan: You are the future, that other s*** is the past, so let's make a better way.' | | Mouth off. A woman samples lipstick shades on a strip of paper. | rantnrave:// NY State Assemblywoman NILY ROZIC and SARA ZIFF, founder of the MODEL ALLIANCE, have teamed up on proposed legislation that could help protect models from abuse. As VANESSA FRIEDMAN reports, approval of the amendment to NY state anti-discrimination laws could be a significant step in changing models' working rights. Models are often employed as independent contractors, leaving them without protections typically extended to those legally classified as employees. Policy has a large part to play. Having a sword of DAMOCLES hanging over would-be creeps and model abusers can be an important step. Yet the industry must acknowledge that these issues run deeper. If abuse goes unreported because models feel pressure to "get along" and keep their jobs, then policy can't be put into action. How can the industry work alongside new regulations to ensure abuse gets reported? How can people be incentivized to change attitudes and behavior toward models? What about zero tolerance from companies that work with agencies? There are other issues for the broader industry here—public awareness, retaining talent, growth and preservation as a cultural sector, the fact that maybe people are less inclined to purchase from brands supporting undesirable practices. It's great that activism is pushing these issues to public awareness, but there's a lot more to be done on the inside, too... On Internet Cultures For better and for worse, the internet has given common banners to scattered individuals. Each passion, however popular or exclusive, however virtuous or otherwise, now has a community of enthusiasts and advocates. In almost all cases, the passion long preceded its online existence, and so the internet has both connected people to their shared interest, and changed it. | |
