I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.

rantnrave:// THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G. (aka Biggie Smalls aka Biggie aka Big Poppa) was considered one of the greatest rappers that ever lived when he was murdered at the age of 24. A look back at his career and the crime in MusicSET: "Biggie Smalls Was The Illlest"... Like JONAH HILL in THIS IS THE END, I am good at and admire pop culture reference skills. In fact, it may be my only talent. My friend Blake had those skills too.  Today I'm establishing THE REDEF BLAKE KRIKORIAN MEMORIAL POP CULTURE REFERENCE SOCIETY. Do you know obscure movie/tv references? Do you constantly lift quotes? Do you have an encyclopedic knowledge of music? Do you binge at least once a month? Do you go to movies alone sometimes? Has your streaming behavior hurt the profitability of an internet provider? Do you recommend to friends what to watch, read and listen to like a Dr. in LA writes scripts for VICODIN? Then you too can apply for membership. The first official member (besides Blake and I) has been awarded to CBS' JIM LANZONE. "Dude, your references are out of control, everyone knows that"... Here's a choice that would give any man an ulcer... This clock thing isn't fair... The SNL "Translator" dog sketch is an instant classic... I took my niece AMELIE to BENIHANA yesterday. It's become the new CHUCK E. CHEESE but with good food. Children's birthday parties all day and all night. She loves it. Her face was filled with wonder but can't get over one thing: the chef didn't do the onion volcano... Happy Birthday to JEFF WACHTEL, DAVID COHN, MARSHALL COHEN, DANIELLA RICH, DANNY FISHMAN, THOMAS LEVINSON.

The Risky Business of Running a Pop Culture-Themed Restaurant
by Whitney Filloon
Jerry Seinfeld's fictional Upper West Side apartment and its early-nineties bachelor pad stylings may have served as the main backdrop for his namesake '90s sitcom, but Monk's Diner ran a close second. Though the restaurant, home to Elaine's favorite "big salad," was fictional, the diner exterior used in the show in fact belongs to a real restaurant in Upper Manhattan where countless fans have since snapped selfies.

When Art Meets Power
by Jenny Uglow
It is impossible and wrong, in this fascinating exhibition on Russian art between 1917-1932, to separate art from politics, utopian propaganda from dystopian tragedy. Aesthetic judgement is inevitably compromised. Some may think it obscene to celebrate this period in Russian art: yet it is surely right to make us confront it, to see the boldness of the art and to try and fathom the mixed motives, the hopes and fears and struggles of the artists involved. Right too, when the headlines are full...
