Remembering TV's Batman, Adam West.

rantnrave:// Last Friday, REBECCA JARVIS of ABC NEWS and I sat down to discuss the future of media (more succinctly news) at THE BRILLIANT MINDS conference in STOCKHOLM. It’s a precarious time for the dissemination of information and journalism. And it’s at a moment when the public needs it more than ever. Trust in those institutions are depressed. Sometimes for good reason. Often not. Some of my point-of-view: Much like the internal ethos at REDEF, It's not enough to be smart anymore, you have to be curious. You should always question the underlying reason as to why you think something. Always ask why. Challenge your news sources. Seek out alternative views. Even if you disagree, understanding the other side is critical. Cynicism isn’t healthy. But a healthy skepticism is. Take care to have a balanced media diet. Take responsibility to seek truth as much as you can. Challenge the beliefs in your peer group. When seeking truth, we often defy logic or fact to be accepted by those groups or to reinforce what we thought we knew. That’s not truth. That’s not fact. That’s the dark side of human nature. We're not entitled to our own facts. Just our own interpretations.  We’re the victims but need to stop blaming others. Platforms are gaining in power and wealth. We must hold them accountable for the media and news that proliferate through their ecosystems. I’m not sure how but this isn’t a printing press of old. This is instantaneous and global. And can be like a pandemic. Information is like a drug. Receiving it causes physiological changes in the body and mind. Engagement and social media are delivery systems. And engagement for business sake can be poison. Giving the people what they want can f*** the people. This is a moment and information is a great commodity and tool for unity or division. We need to own the problem... The amazing thing about WONDER WOMAN isn't the female director or female superhero, it's that anyone has reason to find those things amazing in the first place. But can these real-life action stars shatter HOLLYWOOD's glass ceiling for real? We take a look in MediaSET: "Run the World (Girls): Has 'Wonder Woman' Changed the Game?"... R.I.P. to another superhero TV's BATMAN, ADAM WEST... You don't need to go to school to learn. Ever since I was 17 years old, I learned a lot from ICE CUBE. I was working for JODY GERSON at EMI MUSIC PUBLISHING and had to listen to his first record related to some deal we had. Through his music and lyrics, he painted a picture of a world I knew nothing about. I respect his mind. Love listening to him in interviews. This week's constructive criticism of BILL MAHER is another in a long history of Cube droppin' science. I never met him, but I love him. This is the kind of dialogue the world needs... I know I'm not that bright but I know this: You can't expect morons to change or evolve. They're morons... Walking around STOCKHOLM at  3 am during summer is a trip. Complete daylight and no one on the streets or roads. Like NIGHT OF THE COMET... MICKEY DREXLER's step down from CEO at J. CREW has been called the end of an era. Debates about the company's decline have pointed to changing consumer habits, scrappier competition, product issues, and mounting debt commitments. One thing is certain: there's change—and challenge—ahead for the retailer. FashionSET: "What to Do About J. Crew"... Friend doing well; Former MTV Chief VAN TOFFLER on his new studio ... You may be a terrible parent but you really didn't have shot... Do you love long form journalism? We do. Prepare to go deep on REDEF... Happy Birthday to CAROLE ROBINSON,  EMANUELE DELLA VALLE, RYAN MAGNUSSEN, and JAY HIGGINBOTHAM. And Belated to MICHAEL FERDMAN,  MICHAEL CARNEY, MARK BIRNBAUM,  DANIELLE PELLAND, TED BARNETT, DAN ROSENBERG, JOE FERREIRA, and JASON WITT.

by Andrew E. Kramer
Under the guise of a journalist, the assassin, Artur Denisultanov-Kurmakayev, tried to murder Ms. Okuyeva and her husband, Adam Osmayev, Ukraine's Interior Ministry said. The plot went awry because Ms. Okuyeva was also armed, and the details of the attack and its aftermath are now shedding light on Kiev's role as a testing ground for what Ukrainian officials say are hybrid war activities by Russia, including assassinations.

Modernizing Government Services, From Food Stamps to Foster Care
by Jimmy Chen and Todd Young
When people think of modernizing government, they tend to think of new IT, of improved procurement, of new infrastructure ... rather than social services like foster care or food stamps. But how can we actually help improve daily lives by applying tools and lessons from consumer tech to help put food on the table, or to find a safe foster home for children?
