| rantnrave:// I remember one of the O.J. jurors (I think it was a juror) on television defending her verdict by saying there was no video of the murder. I rolled my eyes. Is video the truth? I remember my friend DAVE GOLDBERG telling me how machine learning and A.I. will both disrupt news by writing it in the next few years. I laughed. Is the written word truth? Well, no more laughing or rolling my eyes. Do you think those things mean truth? Well, researchers at UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON developed an algorithm that takes audio of someone talking and turns that into video of someone speaking those words. We're not talking about dead celebs hawking stuff or TUPAC concert holograms. This is the realest fake news. It's f***ing terrifying. CNN's FAREED ZAKARIA takes a look. The doomsday scenarios of this in our 24-7 mobile video world is just depressing. I take the threat of fake news seriously... Loving GAME OF THRONES. Big uptick in the pace last night. Tiny, vague spoilers ahead. No biggie. But I'm not sure I'd pay back the IRON BANK all at once. If the debt is cheap and you have capital reserves, why not put the money to work and make the payments? Not sure what the interest rate was here. Otherwise as GODRON GEKKO says: "the key to the game is your capital reserves, If you haven't got enough, you can't piss in the tall weed with the big dogs." And BRAN STARK reminds me of a few software developers I know. ARYA STARK is JOHN WICK-ing it up. Good episode. DRACARYS to you... Don't want to get fired? Don't want to get sued? Don't want to be publicly humiliated and disgrace yourself and family? It's quite simple. Don't sexually harass people... I watch a lot of video in my house. Mostly on wi-fi. As I move further away from the modem/router the speed gets worse. Been interested in mesh network solutions. My friends HUNTER WALK and MICHAEL SIPPEY suggested EERO. CEO NICK WEAVER generously sent me the system. It's doubled the download speed immediately. The setup is stellar. The best out-of-box experience I can remember or maybe ever. In fact, I waited a week to install thinking it would be this involved thing. I hooked up 3 rooms in less than 10 minutes total. Highly recommend it and the app is fantastic... You think you know brunch? Think again... Saw JOHN MAYER perform at THE FORUM in LA. First, the sound there is stellar, it was my first time. Second, Mayer is an exceptional musician. Not fair to call him talented. Too easy. You don't play that well if you're just talented. You need to work at it every day forever. Don't believe me?... Happy Birthday to NEIL BLUMENTHAL, CASSIAN ELWES, MIKE ANGUS, KEVIN SMOKLER, NICHOLAS BROWN, ADAM PALMINTERI, RACHNA BHASIN, BEN GOLDMAN, MARY CORIGLIANO, JASON PORT, RICHARD CUSICK, ERIK LUFTGLASS, EDDIE DALVA, and DAMIAN MANNING. Belated to JOHN DIETZ. | | - Jason Hirschhorn, curator |

At the end of June, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook had hit a new level: two billion monthly active users. That number, the company's preferred 'metric' when measuring its own size, means two billion different people used Facebook in the preceding month. It is hard to grasp just how extraordinary that is.

Artificial intelligence is likely to become more powerful than humans some day. Most superintelligent systems will by default develop instrumental subgoals that conflict with human interests. This could have catastrophic consequences. If we don't actively work on control mechanisms and safety of AI systems, this will most likely pose an existential risk to humanity.

Throughout the Western world, the political 'Left' is in disarray. It is fragmented, rudderless and lacks a coherent plan to stem the tide of 'populism', nationalism and xenophobia. Identity politics and questions of religion have done much to fuel both the Right's xenophobic tendencies, and the Left's fragmentation.
