Humans aren't as good as we should be in our capacity to empathize with feelings and thoughts of others, be they humans or other animals on Earth. So maybe part of our formal education should be training in empathy. Imagine how different the world would be if, in fact, that were 'reading, writing, arithmetic, empathy.' | | The Bad News Bears (1976). | rantnrave:// When I was in high school. I used to stand outside TRIGONOMETRY class waiting for my ALGEBRA class and think, "there's no f***ing way I'm going to be able to do that stuff." Sometimes I can intimidate myself out of learning. Never been a numbers guy. I like data. I like the inferences of data. But raw figures. Intimidating. Last November, I was at an executive retreat in WYOMING with a bunch of friends. Once the conversation turned to crypto I got ginger-ale on the brain. All these smarties talking about BITCOIN. BLOCKCHAIN. RIPPLE. It was like being in a chic PARIS restaurant and not speaking French. Ever wish there were crib sheets for basic understanding? NETFLIX has a show for that. VOX's EXPLAINED. A series of episodes shorter than 30 minutes (because shows don't have to be 30 minutes or 1 hour) on such topics as weed, cricket, the exclamation point, extraterrestrial life, esports, the stock market, why diets fail, cryptocurrency, k-pop, gene editing, monogamy, and the racial wealth gap. I appreciate them because they're primers for people like me. And once I understand, I can be let loose on the internet to go deeper. And of course, now I don't feel like a moron when someone wants to talk cryptocurrency. I may want to smack them over the head with a book due to being sick of hearing about their cryptocurrency, but at least I understand them now. It's slightly better than their stories about CROSSFIT and P90X. Same people not shockingly... Speaking of short episodes, congrats to my friends JEFFREY KATZENBERG, MEG WHITMAN and my family at WNDRCO on raising $1 Billion for what they dub NEW TV, "built for easy, on-the-go mobile viewing, allowing today’s leading studios and creative talent to tell original stories in an entirely new way." In short, top-notch short-form productions by top talent. Investors include 21ST CENTURY FOX, DISNEY, ENTERTAINMENT ONE, ITV, LIONSGATE, METRO GOLDWYN MAYER, NBCUNIVERSAL, SONY PICTURES ENTERTAINMENT, VIACOM, WARNER MEDIA, ALIBABA, THE GOLDMAN SACHS GROUP, INC., JPMORGAN CHASE & CO., LIBERTY GLOBAL, MADRONE CAPITAL and CHICO'S BAIL BONDS. Jeffrey is a freak of nature. I never bet against him. Tenacity and will. He's destroyed the bell curve on aging. There is not a 25-year-old on earth with his energy. I look forward to hearing more about this from him at 6 am on a Saturday morning... I've written more about ANTHONY BOURDAIN than any other subject in my REDEF columns. He used his love and knowledge of food to explore the commonalities and differences in all of us. I traveled the world following the places he ate. I never met him, but he meant a lot to me. And the world is a lesser place without him. I miss him every Sunday and beyond. I look back on his life in "Remembering Anthony Bourdain, The Chef of Curiosity"... There are some friends that no matter how much time goes by you just pick up where you left out. 5. 10. 15. 20 years. Doesn't matter. Like riding a bike... Check out the world's first home body scanner from NAKED LABS... I can agree with you. I can be sympathetic to and support your cause. But I'm also increasingly concerned and sometimes alarmed at the tactics for those I agree with... And, ever notice how some people only contact you to lecture you, ask for something or assign their own issues to you? Aware of everything else but themselves.... The defensive don't listen, they interrupt... Happy Birthday to NEIL BLUMENTHAL, NICHOLAS BROWN, CASSIAN ELWES, EDDIE DALVA, RACHNA BHASIN, MIKE ANGUS, ADAM PALMINTERI, KEVIN SMOKLER, BEN GOLDMAN, MARY CORIGLIANO, JASON PORT, RICHARD CUSICK, ERIK LUFTGLASS, and DAMIAN MANNING. | | - Jason Hirschhorn, curator |
