What the f***? | | Neil Finn in 1987. From Split Enz to Crowded House to his solo career, he's one of my favorite songwriters in the whole world. (Rick Eglinton/Toronto Star/Getty Images) | | | rantnrave:// A controversial memo about gender diversity ignites a battle over ideological diversity. It's man vs. woman, nature vs. nurture and left vs. right as the culture wars spread to GOOGLE. This is not RANDOLPH and MORTIMER DUKE stuff. I don't know what's legal here. I suppose there is a FIRST AMENDMENT right to say whatever you want. Stupid or not. True or not. Doesn't mean you get to keep your job does it? Debates galore. Emotions are high. A must-read TechSET: "The Google Memo: Diverse Notes on a Diversity War"... Sometimes I dream. Not often. Last week, I dreamt that I was on FANTASY ISLAND. MR. ROARKE and TATTOO greeted me. I think I was there to be a rock star. On and off stage. On the way to my fantasy another guest was arriving. It was DONALD J. TRUMP. His fantasy was to be POTUS. So it was all just a dream? Just a TV episode? How great is that! Then the GOOGLE HOME alarm went off. "Ok, Google. Stop." It was 6am and there is no Fantasy Island and DJT is actually president. How did I know? I asked "ok, Google. Who is President of the United States?" Google confirmed it. So, now I'm awake and worried about the end of the world because of his TWITTER battle with that North Korean guy with the bad fraternity haircut from the SETH ROGEN movie. Just wondering if I punch 4 8 15 16 23 42 into the computer will it save us? Hoping this works... TV money has made the ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE the wealthiest soccer league in the world. It's helped the EPL expand its global footprint and made everybody rich. But can money buy happiness? We take a look in SportsSET: "Can a Soccer League Be Too Rich for Its Own Good?"... It's possibly not the right thing to say, but let's be honest. It's all BRAN STARK's fault. He had to go climbing... A re-run of my take on THE DEFIANT ONES... From her music to her outspoken politics to her continuing struggles with mental illness, SINÉAD O'CONNOR has given the world countless opportunities to misunderstand her, and the world has complied. Can the world judge less and listen more? MusicSET: "Sinéad O'Connor's Universal Truths"... Someone explain jicama to me. I get jicama if you dipped it in gravy. But it's essentially tasteless. I don't want your jicama... One of my favorite shows in HBO's HARD KNOCKS. Love the athletes in training camp fighting for their jobs. The dreams. The hopes. Being called in by the coach. The cuts. The LIEV SCHREIBER narration. This season focuses on the TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS. The greatest thing in episode 1? The players discussing GAME OF THRONES. The entire coda of the episode featured awesome vignettes. Here's a snippet. I've asked HBO to post all of them but here's the full episode for now... Back tomorrow with rant on media industry OTT moves overall... Happy Birthday to BETSY MORGAN, DAVID MATHISON, CORY LLEWELLYN, CHRIS PETROVIC, and AURORA HERNANDEZ. And Belated to JEFF BERMAN. | | - Jason Hirschhorn, curator |

People in tech and media have been saying that ‘content is king’ for a long time - perhaps since the VHS/Betamax battle of the early 1980s, and perhaps longer. Content and access to content was a strategic lever for technology. I’m not sure how much this is true anymore. Music and books don’t | |
