[As a vocalist] Your instrument is you. It’s not just your throat, it’s you. If you’re burnt out, if you’re depressed, if you’re feeling weary and lost and paranoid, you’re a mess.

rantnrave:// Wasn't going to publish today due to the Jewish holiday and a severe food coma by the amazing spread my sister JODY made last night. She deserves a standing ovation. So, please do. My favorite part of ROSH HASHANAH is going back to the table after I lay down after the first time I went to the table... My firstborn niece, LILY and I went to our Sunday brunch at SOHO HOUSE in WEST HOLLYWOOD yesterday. Sadly, I thought I was going to be the cool uncle that taught her stuff. She often laps me. She's 12. But the SERENA WILLIAMS chaos over the weekend led to a good discussion about rules and gender. "Sometimes we do get treated differently, like when the teacher calls on the boys instead of the girls." The kid gets it. As you know, a series of violations called by a male chair umpire against the tennis superstar opens up a fierce discussion about the rules of the game, gender, and power. The debates are real and the takes divided. My friend LAUREN ZALAZNICK and I take a look at "Unsports(wo)manlike Behavior? Serena Williams: “The Rules,” Race, Gender and Debate"... Breaking News: ELON MUSK 's weed dealer resigns. But yes, Elon is a genius and has had a massive impact. But who among us would disagree that the person that invented the RABBIT WINE TOOLKIT is also a genius and has touched more lives?... Some media companies and the industry has had trouble, not in small part, due to the fact executives stay around in the top jobs too long and the boards are f***ing clueless about strategy. And the average CEO seems to have a term of eternity. Makes me think of something I said at an AWESOMENESSTV town hall when "interviewed" by founder and former CEO, BRIAN ROBBINS... The rules are simple really. Don’t murder, steal, sexually harass, back racists, or dip your chicken fingers in soda ... This is also AMERICA... I asked PREET BHARARA about the AG investigating the anonymous Op-Ed... The centuries-old definition of male masculinity doesn't really buoy males talking about mental health. I recently discussed this with my new pal, LIZ PLANK. And she highlights a new ad campaign that may help the discussion turn a corner... MAC MILLER was a fearless explorer of rap's musical and psychological depths and a beloved champion of the hip-hop underground. He reinvented himself repeatedly on his seven-year journey from the party rap of "Blue Slide Park" to the dark introspection of "Swimming," but he couldn't outrun his demons. MUSICREDEF's MATTY KARAS takes a look in "Mac Miller Never Stopped Swimming Toward the Deep End." The REDEF SET includes a heartfelt message from Mac's friend and collaborator JOHN MAYER... Happy Birthday to MATHEW INGRAM and SORAYA DARABI. Belated to HOSAIN RAHMAN, DANA SETTLE, ABIGAIL KLEM, JEREMIAH ZINN, and TOBY GUNDERSON.

RETRO READ: Goals Gone Wild: The Systematic Side Effects of Over-Prescribing Goal Setting
by Lisa D. Ordóñez, Maurice E. Schweitzer, Adam D. Galinsky...
For decades, goal setting has been promoted as a halcyon pill for improving employee motivation and performance in organizations. Advocates of goal setting argue that for goals to be successful, they should be specific and challenging, and countless studies find that specific, challenging goals motivate performance far better than "do your best" exhortations.

What commercialization is doing to cannabis
by Ben Cort
In 2012, Colorado legalized cannabis and added to what has fast become a multibillion-dollar global industry for all things weed-related: from vape pens to brownies and beyond. But to say that we've legalized marijuana is subtly misleading -- what we've really done is commercialized THC, says educator Ben Cort, and that's led to products that are unnaturally potent.
