One of my all time heroes, George Lucas
(Jim Wilson/New York Times Co./Getty Images)
Thursday - October 05, 2017 Thu - 10/05/17
rantnrave:// I have heroes. People I admire and whose work I love. GEORGE LUCAS is a top 5'er. So i have a good excuse for today's late publish. Yesterday, I had a dream come true. One for any child or man-child that grew up around the same time. I spent the day at LUCASFILM and INDUSTRIAL LIGHT & MAGIC. The genius (and fun) folks behind so many of my favorite films and special effects that shaped the entire industry and our collective memory. A few names? STAR WARS. E.T., RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, GHOSTBUSTERS, INNERSPACE, THE MUMMY, A.I., TRANSFORMERS, DIE HARD 2. HOOK, JURASSIC PARK and more and more. HQ'd at THE PRESIDIO in SF. Demoed next-gen VR/AR experiences. 100s of the original models, costumes, matte paintings (from artists like RALPH McQAURRIE), original editing machines and on and on. I could have spent a week there and would still want more. Amazing. One of the most innovative places I've ever been. We talk about the tech world and innovation all time. We forget that Lucas and those mavericks and artists he worked with made some of the great technical and creative innovations in the history of any business. Not just from scratch but ingenious application of other technologies. Those innovations have had positive implications for many industries. What a great place to work... I'd fund a SETH ROGEN / EVAN GOLDBERG penned rom-com where TRUMP and KIM JONG-UN take a weekend vacation together. Or something. MOTUS AND JONG GO TO MAR-A-LAGO. They definitely screw each other and fight about who goes on top... Some cool new REDEF SETS.... SportsSET: "The Sports Jerseys We Love (and Hate)". And the stories they tell as they make their way from stadiums to bars to culture and even couture. Whose jersey are you wearing?... I'll take a "no", but really don't like it when the ask is an easy "yes"... With creative director debuts at CHLOÉ and GIVENCHY and American showings from VIRGIL ABLOH, JOSEPH ALTUZARRA, and THOM BROWNE, there were new projects from familiar faces throughout Paris. With new looks for some of fashion’s oldest houses, PARIS FASHION WEEK stood for divergent paths, and change. FashionSET: "Divergent Paths to Paris: PFW, S/S 2018"... They called him Slick Rick. One of the best coaches in college basketball history. And charming -- like teflon to the NCAA. But even he couldn't win when the FBI got involved. "The Scandal Rick Pitino Couldn't Beat"... Lie. Berate. Shame. Interrupt. Molest. Cheat. Sue. Ruin. Dismiss. Blame. Delay. Insult. Be Uninformed. Disrespect. Discriminate. Divide. Hate. Be Shallow. Keep working hard at this and you may become of the worst POTUS in history. #MOTUS... Happy Birthday to WES NICHOLS, FRAN POMERANTZ, FAISAL GALARIA, JON BANNER, CABLE NEUHAUS, and SAHAR ELHABASHI.
