| rantnrave:// There's a scene in the 3rd season premiere of STARZ's OUTLANDER. The main character CLAIRE has been through it. She's seen the carnage of war in the 1740s and 1940s. She's a nurse and healer. Living a life far beyond what was expected in either of those times. Back from the past, she moves to CAMBRIDGE as her husband takes a job at HARVARD. As the faculty greet them, the dean scoffs at her reading habits and says she should "resume more important and, um, fitting domestic concerns for a lady." She's silent. She sucks it up. Just another day for a woman. Fast forward to non-fiction and the HARVEY WEINSTEIN scandal and all the women stepping forward. ASHLEY JUDD. ROSE MCGOWAN. ASIA ARGENTO. LAUREN SIVAN. ROSANNA ARQUETTE. GRETCHEN MOL. GWYNETH PALTROW. ANGELINA JOLIE. MIRA SORVINO. Just a few of the brave woman who have endured the lechery. Substantial, powerful women. I think about them standing on a red carpet in CANNES. Or the OSCARS. Or an audition. Or any event. There are tons of pictures of most of them with Weinstein. They were following their dream and had to endure this behavior like it was some evil toll bridge to get to where they wanted to be. Many in the industry heard the rumors for years. Many knew secondhand. And many knew directly. We have a history of blaming the victim. They're scared. Who stands up for them? It's rare in life that people step forward. They don't want to get involved. They think of the risk if they're wrong. Or the risk to their self interest. Not an excuse by any means, but human. And sometimes very cowardly. We remember history through the whistleblowers. But they were few and often not immediate. That saddens me. What's also clear now is that he was feared. But not loved. And you know the old question that MACHIAVELLI posed: "Whether it is better to be loved than feared?" Harvey chose fear. And when he reached out to friends to defend him, he realized that only those who loved and cared would even consider it. And they weren't there. As JEFFREY KATZENBERG wrote to him, "it seems to me we are now down to degrees of horrible... I cannot in any way say this is OK with me… It’s not at all, and I am sickened by it, angry with you and incredibly disappointed in you." The Weinstein revelations will rock HOLLYWOOD and many more will be called out. I think you'll see a bloodletting in all industries. And it's about time. Careers and reputations will be ruined. But I worry that we'll lose the meaning in all this. That the topic will be hijacked. Or as I call it, KAEPERNICK'd. The issue will be politicized. Hollywood will be portrayed as a morally bankrupt SODOM and GOMORRAH. People having consensual affairs will be disgraced. There will be false accusations. The media will salivate. We'll eat it up. And we’ll lose the plot. How do we fix this? Women have to deal with this horror every day. Imagine the demoralization. I can't. Or I couldn't until I read my friend RONAN FARROW's fantastic investigative piece in THE NEW YORKER. Detailing the machine that protects offenders. But also a stunning and sickening audio recording. This is just the beginning. We take a look in "Hollywood Talks Back to Harvey Weinstein." It has, it appears, been a long time coming... I've been waiting for musicians to speak up. I grew up expecting that when evil threatened the world. Musicians put into words and music what many of us feel but cannot express. Finally, my prayers were answered. EMINEM is here. Breathtaking... Many of you ask me for television show recommendations. Sometimes I research shows based on themes. News broke that STEVEN SPIELBERG will be reviving his '80s show AMAZING STORIES with APPLE. It was a favorite of mine growing up. I loved anthology series that dealt with the supernatural and sci-fi worlds. They were fun, sometimes strange and sometimes spooky. But they always told us deep stuff about the world around us in the guise of fantasy. If you want to go down the rabbit hole with me, watch THE TWILIGHT ZONE, ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS, THE OUTER LIMITS, BLACK MIRROR, ROOM 104, NIGHT GALLERY and TALES FROM THE DARK SIDE. That will get you going. What did I miss?... And please don't forget that tonight is the 3rd season premiere of SAM ESMAIL's MR. ROBOT on USA NETWORK. Like the shows above, it has a lot to say about our world... Happy Birthday to MARC GEIGER, DAVID KENNY, SHAUNA MEI, EMILY GLASSMAN, CHRIS CUNNINGHAM and BEN MENDELSON. | | - Jason Hirschhorn, curator |
