As I get older, the more I stay focused on the acceptance of myself and others, and choose compassion over judgment and curiosity over fear. | | Before social media. "Life moves pretty fast. | rantnrave:// Artists put into words, music, and images all the things we feel but often cannot express. Some of the most epic talents have very sad stories. Many are musicians. There are a lot of good documentaries out there that tell their stories. SHOWTIME has a good track record in recent years with music docs. GEORGE MICHAEL: FREEDOM. Immense talent. Endless ambition. Need to be loved. Artistry vs. commerce. Regret. Love. Loss... WHITNEY. "CAN I BE ME." Almost everything I thought I knew about WHITNEY HOUSTON was wrong. "Even though she had made millions of dollars and was recognized as having one of the greatest voices of all time, she still couldn't do what she wanted, either professionally or in her personal life"... AS I AM: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF DJ AM. A sweet and talented kid that grew up to be an innovative DJ and mash-up pioneer. But he had demons from childhood and tragedy in his life. Boundless creativity. Addictive personality. Huge heart. An early death. You want to hug the guy but you can't. Not on Showtime but one from a couple of years ago: The ultimate heartbreaker, AMY. The rise and fall of one of the greatest vocal talents in decades, ANY WINEHOUSE. This film killed me. It's a must... When will the rest of the old guard media companies learn something from NETFLIX's "shock and awe" release schedule? Much of the future of media may rely on direct to consumer subscriptions. These peeps clearly release to manage churn. Released or coming up soon: THE CROWN season 2. PEAKY BLINDERS season 4. BLACK MIRROR season 4. LONGMIRE season 6. SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT. GODLESS. MARVEL'S THE PUNISHER. And so many more. Boom. Boom. Boom. I never think about canceling. In all fairness, was talking to JEFF HIRSCH of STARZ about this kind of strategy and they too seem to base their releases off churn to some great success on OTT-only subscriptions. One other small product tweak I want to give Netflix a pat on the back for. I watch a lot of TV and I enjoy ye olde "channel surfing." On their site and on AMAZON FIRE TV choosing a promo image auto plays where you left off or a preview. Simple, on-demand channel surfing... Thanks to SOHO HOUSE WEST HOLLYWOOD for saving my THANKSGIVING... TILE was not a good 1.0 product. Bluetooth, not direct GPS. The volume was so low you couldn't hear beeps to find what you lost. I just expected something different. It definitely improved immensely since then. Gotta give props for this great commercial... I missed this amazingness from CARDS AGAINST HUMANITY. So great... The fashion industry does not set fashions - it proposes them. It tries to work out the mood and the zeitgeist and looks for ideas that might express that. The same, increasingly, for Facebook - it cannot really decide how people use its products or what they see, only propose.

Many thoughtful people are upset that Russian trolls took advantage of Facebook and Twitter policies to send around false information, whether as advertising or (literally) fake news. Taking off from this, the Economist proceeds to call for the regulation—by someone—of social media. I write to beg you to change your minds.

If you were assigned to design television from scratch probably the last thing you'd do was include a series of local broadcast television stations whose primary delivery mechanism was a mid-20th century technology called "over the air." You certainly wouldn't make each one independent and limit the number of stations that could be owned by any given network.

The successful formation of a union at the Los Angeles Times would have been largely unimaginable in the last century. From 1960 to 1980, the Times was a totem of West Coast journalism that had been built up into a journalistic force by the aspirations of Otis Chandler, the golden boy heir to the one […]

The rise of the internet promised to deliver a wealth of information to the public. It had the power to enrich lives if the information conveyed was considered incorruptible and fact-checked by reputable journalistic outlets. This didn't quite pan out.

We all have a pretty good idea about things that drag down our productivity or suck up time that would be better spent on more fulfilling activities. Two years ago I made a commitment to stop bringing my mobile phone into my bedroom and with like a 95% compliance rate this made a big improvement.

In the wild, giant panda mating occurs just as nature specials would have you believe. There’s intense competition for each female, and the dominant male will mate with her several times to ensure success. And that strategy works: Wild female pandas generally give birth every two years. But that low birth rate means that captive breeding programs are essential to sustaining the endangered species. And in captivity, mating and successful pregnancies are tricky affairs-which is why it’s always a...
