It is impossible for someone to lie unless he thinks he knows the truth. Producing bullshit requires no such conviction. A person who lies is thereby responding to the truth, and he is to that extent respectful of it. When an honest man speaks, he says only what he believes to be true; and for the liar, it is correspondingly indispensable that he considers his statements to be false. For the bullshitter, however, all these bets are off: he is neither on the side of the true nor on the side of the false. His eye is not on the facts at all, as the eyes of the honest man and of the liar are, except insofar as they may be pertinent to his interest in getting away with what he says. He does not care whether the things he says describe reality correctly. He just picks them out, or makes them up, to suit his purpose. | | "The Shining" (1980) (Warner Bros.) | | | | “It is impossible for someone to lie unless he thinks he knows the truth. | rantnrave:// LOS ANGELES has had some business identity issues in the last decade. Once a HOLLYWOOD company town, many felt insecure when compared to their cousins up north in SILICON VALLEY. Last night I was at a dinner hosted by my friend and REDEF investor UPFRONT VENTURES' MARK SUSTER with a bunch of LA-based media and technology startups. Something special is happening. LA is the model for THE HYBRID FOUNDERS: They understand technology, product, data, storytelling, and brand. That unique mixture of skills is the basis for the next evolution of leaders in the space... Shoutout to BARON DAVIS for the best startup company name by far: BLACK SANTA... A few times this month I've overheard talk that a lot of dedicated and talented civil servants in government agencies plan to leave their roles due to their unease with the TRUMP administration. While I understand the initial reaction I can only say: please stay. That's patriotic. He needs you and we need you... Does CNN or other cable news networks have an Editor-In-Chief? An ombudsman? Journalism is a business, yes. But the 4th estate is a vital part of our democracy and it's been damaged. I think any outlet should have both. Not just a CEO or President... I've never really been able to be a work for hire. Or just be at a job. To get up every day I have to be super passionate about what I'm doing. I've been fortunate. I just can't dedicate myself to something without the fire lit... Relationships in business are more important to me than deal terms... I'm not a big fan of Presidental phoners with news outlets. You hear me cable news?... DONALD TRUMP absolutely deserves to be TIME PERSON OF THE YEAR. It's not a popularity contest or a good person pageant. He made an impact. Like it or not... Thinking a lot about when parents say to their kids: "We don't respond to tantrums"... A CEO's job is to lead, guide and drive. Not babysit... CRAIG SHAPIRO on "Voting With Your Dollars"... TV definitely got us... Happy Birthday to DANIEL BLACKMAN and RACHEL SKLAR. | | - Jason Hirschhorn, curator |

In February 2013, Ebtisam Masto fled Syria with her six children. They crossed the border to Lebanon and headed for the capital, Beirut, where Masto's husband, Mohammed, had been working to support his family since before the civil war began. When they arrived, Masto registered the family with the UN refugee agency in the city. | |
