I texted my 16-year-old daughter to ask her what she thought of Cardi B and when she responded in all caps and a long series exclamation marks I knew we had to get her. | | Cardi B at the Day for Night festival in Houston, Dec. 16, 2017. | rantnrave:// Though there was not yet any clear confirmation, word broke on social media late Thursday night of the death of CECIL TAYLOR, one of the great improvisational musicians of the past century and a towering figure in avant-garde music. RIP, and more to come... How is it possible that CARDI B, one of the dominant pop stars of 2017, is just releasing her debut album today? How did anyone not notice it had been missing? This wasn't how it used to happen, when the rule was capitalize immediately and who cares if the rest of the album is any good, and it isn't how it's supposed to happen now, when the rule is release now mix later, or something like that. But the regular shmegular Ms. Almanzar, who joined the cast of VH1's "LOVE & HIP-HOP: NEW YORK" in late 2015 and signed to ATLANTIC RECORDS in late 2016, has been moving deliberately, gingerly and strategically all along, letting her singles and a steady stream of features speak for themselves, letting everyone else worry about who she's dating and what she's plotting, and carefully picking her moment instead of letting the moment pick her. I like her career already and it's possible it hasn't quite started yet. (It's also possible she's already peaked, I get how that works, but I'm betting otherwise.) (And yes I know there have been a couple mixtapes along the way, too.) In case the world isn't clear about exactly whose moment this is, INVASION OF PRIVACY is out now, she's the musical guest on SNL on Saturday and she's hosting THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JIMMY FALLON on Monday. Which *is* how it's supposed to happen these days. That part she's got a handle on... P.S. Since the album includes her blockbuster 2017 single, and since RIAA gold and platinum rules count all streams of all tracks on an album, no matter when they occurred, "Invasion of Privacy" entered the world as a gold album. Which is weird, and probably wrong. Then again, gold and platinum rules have always been a little wrong... DAVID LETTERMAN chats with JAY-Z on the next episode of MY NEXT GUEST NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION, which drops today on NETFLIX... HIGH FIDELITY coming to TV... Singer-songwriter FRANCES BEAN COBAIN... Failed music streaming service or STEFON nightclub recommendation?... It's FRIDAY and along with Cardi B that means new music from LIL XAN, DR. OCTAGON, DANIEL AVERY, WYE OAK, UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA, KYLIE MINOGUE, ALISON WONDERLAND, HOP ALONG, FENNE LILY, CLARICE JENSEN, CNCO, BLACKBERRY SMOKE, THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS, HINDS, EELS, FLATBUSH ZOMBIES, KALI UCHIS, ERIC BELLINGER, BAMBARA, SARAH SHOOK & THE DISARMERS, TOM MISCH, RAINBOW KITTEN SURPRISE, UNDEROATH and SLOAN... And compilations, we've got compilations. KESHA, ST. VINCENT, BOB DYLAN and others reimagine pop standards as same-sex wedding songs on UNIVERSAL LOVE... KACEY MUSGRAVES, WILLIE NELSON, the late CHRIS CORNELL and more set the Man in Black's poems to music on JOHNNY CASH: FOREVER WORDS... Major pop stars redo ELTON JOHN and BERNIE TAUPIN on REVAMP, and major country stars do the same on RESTORATION... That's a lot of redoing for one week if you ask me, but no one did... RIP CHUCK FREEZE. | | - Matty Karas, curator |
