The thought that World War III could start over the use of my song title was disturbing... But what could I do? Sue him for cultural appropriation?

rantnrave:// I understand radius clauses but damn, COACHELLA, five months and the entire West Coast of the UNITED STATES? That's the length of time and the area in which Coachella acts are prohibited from playing any other festival, according to a federal lawsuit filed by the organizers of Portland's SOUL'D OUT FESTIVAL. They say SZA, DANIEL CAESAR and TANK AND THE BANGAS all turned them down citing Coachella's radius clause, which sounds more like an intercontinental ballistic missile clause, covering an area from ARIZONA to WASHINGTON state. Says Coachella owner AEG: "Radius clauses are an industry standard used by festival, concert and tour promoters designed to protect the integrity and exclusivity of their events." Sure. But what the integrity of SZA fans in Portland or Olympia who might not have the disposable income to fly to Southern California for a weekend to see her? What about their fun? What about anyone else who wants to stage a festival somewhere in the 1,500 miles between Tacoma and Tucson?... Elsewhere in the U.S. court system, this 54-page ruling in an ongoing case between several music publishers and WOLFGANG'S VAULT, though riddled with redactions, is a great primer in a) how complicated and confusing it can be to license a composition embedded in a 40-year-old concert video you bought from a legendary rock and roll promoter, and b) how important it is, if you are going to try to do it anyway, that you do the work to understand and honor all those complications. Othwerwise, you may find yourself on the receiving end of a legal missive from someone like KEITH RICHARDS saying he has no idea what you're talking about and he's Keith Richards and you, no matter how many concert-film archives you have acquired, are not. JUDGE EDGARDO RAMOS, in New York, ruled that Wolfgang's Vault committed willful copyright infringement by streaming a treasure trove of live recordings without proper licenses but he declined to issue an injunction against the company, citing "the public's interest" in the music and the likelihood that licenses can still be worked out. Trial to come... This is one of the great side one, track ones on a debut album. Ever... (Or, rather, it would be, if most pop albums still had album sides. But still)... RIP YVONNE STAPLES.

Spotify could kill Jazz, Soul and Classical music. Really.
by Chris Rizik
While there has been a lot of press about how streaming initially reduced the overall payments to record companies and artists, what hasn’t been addressed as much is how streaming has changed which artists get paid. Without a doubt, streaming has stacked the deck toward hip-hop, pop, and other genres whose listeners are teenagers and twenty-somethings.

'Atlanta,' Donald Glover and the Invisibility of Black Genius
by Michael Harriot
The show’s subversive personality doesn’t even try to accommodate white sensibilities. It is not unapologetically black, because it seems to be unaware that an apology is even necessary. It is “I don’t give a damn if they’re watching” black. It is dripping with wet-lemon-pepper-wings seasoning, the hilarity of Caucasian puppy love and indifference to white eyes.

“It’s too easy to get guns, first and foremost,” Aldean said. “When you can walk in somewhere and you can get one in 5 minutes, do a background check that takes 5 minutes, like how in-depth is that background check?
