There’s always some 70-year-old in a Def Leppard t-shirt telling me [I'm] not rock and roll because it’s not what they want. It’s about that fundamental and undeniable lack of fear to be yourself and say what you think—that’s rock and roll. | | Nina Kraviz at the Field Day Festival, London, June 3, 2017. | rantnrave:// CARDI B is the top nominee for the VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS, which is the only news that made any sense at all on Monday, July 16, 2018. But only one of the nominations is for a video in which she's the lead artist ("BARTIER CARDI" for Best Hip Hop Video). Half of the 10 are for the remix of BRUNO MARS' "FINESSE." She's the top nominee, numerically speaking, and yet she seemed strangely absent from the nominations announcement. MTV also showered nominations on the CARTERS, CHILDISH GAMBINO and DRAKE, for what it's worth, and will have better entertainment than the GRAMMYS. Also for what it's worth, the nominees and winners don't particularly matter. I'll offer free newsletters for the rest of the year to anyone who can name a single winner from 2017 without looking it up... STILL STORCH is VEVO's mini-documentary on the rise, fall and return of producer SCOTT STORCH, a dominant force in pop in the 2000s who was all but ruined by the end of the decade. It's a great redemption story, a BEHIND THE MUSIC minus the melodrama. Props to director ROLLO JACKSON and to exec producer JOSEPH PATEL and the rest of the Vevo crew... This is the first substantive piece I've read about UNITEDMASTERS since it launched in November as a data-friendly, alternative-to-labels indie distribution service. That's a slow rollout, STEVE STOUTE. BILLBOARD's CHERI HU isn't convinced the differentiating factors are there yet. The company's Twitter is a great follow, though, and these videos are good, too. UM is definitely trying to an educational/inspirational role. Curious to see where it leads... I like meat and I like veggies but I've never been a fan of veggies masquerading as meat but I had my first IMPOSSIBLE BURGER last week and it was kind of great. Thank you JASON HIRSCHHORN, SOHO HOUSE WEST HOLLYWOOD and the slice of cheese you both insisted I get as an add-on. LIVE NATION is now offering Impossible Burgers at 37 amphitheaters across the US and claims they're the first concert spaces anywhere to offer the delicious fake meat treat. In related news, GANG GANG DANCE's BRIAN DEGRAW says New York veggie joint SUPERIORITY BURGER was a major influence on the band's new album, KAZUASHITA. Yum... What if those predictions about APPLE MUSIC surpassing SPOTIFY in the US are only valid for another year or so? ... Spotify believes there are multiple New Yorks. Spotify is not wrong... The museum exhibition DAVID BOWIE IS, which closed Sunday after its final run at the BROOKLYN MUSEUM, will live on as a VR app... DARYL HALL's LIVE FROM DARYL'S HOUSE is going back into production under a new partnership with BMG... I just noticed that if you try playing a song in YOUTUBE MUSIC while you're watching a YOUTUBE video on your laptop, the video stops playing. That's weird...
