| | rantnrave:// DUBSET's deal with SONY is a big step forward for getting DJ sets and unauthorized remixes into SPOTIFY and elsewhere, and a potential step backward, some people believe, for embattled™ SOUNDCLOUD, which long enjoyed something of a monopoly on that kind of content among major streaming sites. But SoundCloud has a long head start in branding and goodwill in the space. Does the coming availability of monetizable DJ sets put the company's new management team on the offensive or the defensive? Do DJs and remixers remain loyal? Does someone give them a reason to? And how much of SONY's catalog will be available to them, wherever they go?... What you are and are not allowed to eat in dancehall music, and how artists like ISHAWNA are trying to change that. Why is there no album called "...AND MAKEUP" in the KISS catalog?... Every time a newspaper goes out of print, I feel a loss. The VILLAGE VOICE may be a decade too late in its move to a digital-only format and it may be a decade since I've touched a copy, but it was a formative influence on me and I'd put its music section in the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME tomorrow if I could. Fare thee well all you red boxes throughout NEW YORK CITY... It goes without saying that the standard WENNER-esque canon of history's best albums is narrowminded and wrong, and PITCHFORK's attempt to correct the historical record with a 1960s top-200 list that makes room for NINA SIMONE, JOHN COLTRANE and MILES DAVIS in the top 10 is a welcome update. There's no breaking news in here, but if it leads some kids, or anyone, to a better understanding of ERIC DOLPHY or the VELVET UNDERGROUND, then mission accomplished.
