As a delivery device for moments of inner emergency, no art form can approach the immediacy of popular song. A novel cannot assault you while you wait in line at the supermarket; a painting cannot reach out and turn your head as you walk on by; a poem’s feet cannot chase you down the street; a movie cannot screen itself.

rantnrave:// We still don't know the LAS VEGAS shooter's motive, or if he even had one. But in light of the fact that the attack on the ROUTE 91 HARVEST festival took place with previous assaults in PARIS, ORLANDO and MANCHESTER fresh in our minds, the news that the shooter booked rooms earlier this summer within view of LOLLAPALOOZA in CHICAGO and the LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL fest is Las Vegas is chilling. What is it about music? Are festivals an easy target, or is it something deeper than that? Can freedom and community and art inspire, or attract, that kind of hatred? How can the community be made to feel safe? Or be made to *be* safe? One particular type of event that may produce jitters going forward, at least for a while: Las Vegas dance-music pool parties. Discussions about gun control and the NRA are unlikely to go away anytime soon... Got four free hours this weekend? Seems like a perfect weekend for PETER BOGDANOVICH's flawed but sweet (and long) TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS documentary, RUNNIN' DOWN A DREAM. Which is on NETFLIX. Just sayin'. I like the first half, which does a great job of capturing the thrill and chaos and organic beauty of being in a band, better than the second half, which has a lot of ground to cover and uses some familiar BEHIND THE MUSIC tropes and some elisions to do so. Amazing how badly STEVIE NICKS wanted to be in the band. Amazing what a not-good response Petty's "but there aren't any girls in the Heartbreakers" is. MusicSET: "Remembering Tom Petty: He Was an American Boy"... Worst attempt to quote JAY-Z ever. And not just because it isn't a real quote... It's FRIDAY and that means new music from KELELA, KAITLYN AURELIA SMITH, LIAM GALLAGHER, LIL PUMP, MARILYN MANSON, BENJAMIN CLEMENTINE (actually his album dropped earlier this week), DAPHNI, POPPY, DHANI HARRISON, WHITNEY ROSE, CUNNINLYNGUISTS, DAME D.O.L.L.A., DERADOORIAN, BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, AUGUST BURNS RED, ZAYTOVEN, JERROD NIEMANN, BECCA MANCARI, WEAVES, CARLA BRUNI, WOLF PARADE, THE WEATHER STATION, KELE OKEREKE, LISA LOEB and LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA's all-star single for PUERTO RICO hurricane relief.

During a brief period of respite from summer tours and performing obligations, Alice Blackhurst met Patti Smith on a humid, tropically stormy day at her home in New York City, where her cat, Cairo, stalked between the stacks of books and art objects, and the sounds of ubiquitous Manhattan traffic railed sporadically against the walls.
