| rantnrave:// Oh my god this eight-minute bossa nova explosion from jazz trumpeter JAIMIE BRANCH's new album FLY OR DIE II. Fierce. And double oh my god that rhythm section of JASON AJEMIAN and CHAD TAYLOR. I can't promise it will make you glad you woke up today but it will definitely make you *aware* you woke up today. Which seems to be at least part of the point of an album bracketed by two protest songs that see the prodigiously gifted Branch branching out into a new role as vocalist: the epic "PRAYER FOR AMERIKKKA PT. 1 & 2" and the extended middle finger of "LOVE SONG" ("for a**holes and clowns"). Her main weapon of protest, though, remains her trumpet, one of the most explosive instruments I've had the pleasure of hearing in a variety of live settings over the past year, an experience I can't recommend enough... Look who's on the cover of TIME, and oh by the way that's a really nice profile of STORMZY, who tells the magazine, "I know I’m the product of bare injustice. There are so many iconic, legendary, more influential grime songs that are never going to sell as much records as I’ve sold." He's giving back, in multiple ways... Vinyl mixtapes anyone? You can now cut your own vinyl records, at home. If, however, you're still in the habit of making mixtapes on actual tape, you may be in trouble. The audio cassette production business has been disrupted by a shortage of gamma ferric oxide, which puts the magnet in magnetic tape... TEKASHI 6IX9INE has a new two-album deal with his old label 10K PROJECTS, signed, presumably, behind prison walls. The tougher part for him, once he gets out (which could be a soon as January), will be finding a club willing to book him. "It would be a very big risk,” a spokesperson for New York club S.O.B. tells COMPLEX... But the late MICHAEL JACKSON, he can get a booking on BROADWAY... Congrats to DAVID FRICKE and HEIDI WALESON, winners of Outstanding Music Criticism honors at the ASCAP's Deems Taylor/Virgil Thompson Awards. Fricke was cited for his liner notes for the 50th anniversary box set of the BAND's MUSIC FROM BIG PINK, and Waleson for her book MAD SCENES AND EXIT ARIAS: THE DEATH OF THE NEW YORK CITY OPERA AND THE FUTURE OF OPERA IN AMERICA. Other honorees include TOM PIAZZA for his OXFORD AMERICAN longread on JOHN PRINE and DANIELLE WARD-GRIFFIN for her study of the relationship between opera and television in the 1950s and '60s... It's FRIDAY and, in addition to Jaimie Branch, that means new music from BIG THIEF, KIM GORDON, LIL' KIM, BABYMETAL, CASANOVA, the DEVIL WEARS PRADA, MARQUIS HILL, YK OSIRIS, LIL TJAY, CODY JINKS, RUSTON KELLY, LINDSTRØM, BLUT AUS NORD, JULIEN CHANG, 88RISING, FANTASIA, BLOOD ORANGE & THIRD COAST PERCUSSION, RICHARD DAWSON, MARK KOZELEK & PETRA HADEN, BLUE HAWAII, LACUNA COIL, LIFE OF AGONY, LIGHTNING BOLT, WALE, YOUNGBOY NEVER BROKE AGAIN, ALLAH-LAHS, STARCRAWLER, DEVON WELSH, CHRIS FARREN, STEPHEN MALLINDER, ELBOW, JOSEPH ARTHUR, PIZZAGIRL, NEVER ENDING GAME, CURSIVE, 808 STATE and ART ALEXAKIS... RIP STEPHEN SWID, the S in SBK ENTERTAINMENT who went on to turn SESAC into a performing rights powerhouse, and reggae singer/producer GLEN BROWN. | | - Matty Karas, curator |

A couple of weeks ago I received an email from an A&R person at a global dance music label. It was a pretty standard email along the lines of "hey we like your song, would you be interested in licensing it to us?" which I've received before and usually they amount to nothing. | |
