| rantnrave:// What music scares you? The creeping synth arpeggios of JOHN CARPENTER's original HALLOWEEN theme? The jarring minor major seventh string stabs of BERNARD HERRMANN's PSYCHO theme? The maddening absence of music in most of HITCHCOCK's THE BIRDS? It's always been that last one for me—the missing musical signal to remind me that I am, in fact, watching a movie. It's sort of the "4:33" of film scores, forcing you simultaneously to absorb what isn't there (which is also one of the secrets of great horror film editing) and to pay extra attention to the sounds that remain, the ones you otherwise might not have noticed. (Some of those environmental sounds in "The Birds," it should be noted, are performed by a musician, OSKAR SALA, on an early electronic instrument called a Trautonium, but they serve more as sound effects than as "music.") I first saw/heard the film as a child, and I've been petrified of birds ever since. Music, to me, is a provider of emotional warmth and sustenance, no matter how icy or frightening its intent. No music? That's horror... Hell, even death metal fans find joy, peace and transcendence in their chosen style of music, according to science. How are you supposed to scare them with a mere cello or synthesizer?... You may, however, find plenty to scare you in the stories in the HALLOWEEN day mix of music stories below. SPOTIFY is creeping on your music choices and your moods. BOBBY "BORIS" PICKETT kept making songs long after "MONSTER MASH." The PRINCE OF DARKNESS is still out there somewhere. Some dude in a dark suit who lives in an old, gated neoclassical mansion keeps trying to steal the soul of your favorite songs. Feeling a chill yet?... A superhero-worthy lineup of artists including TRAVIS SCOTT, CHANCE THE RAPPER, SZA and JOHN MAYER will pay tribute to MAC MILLER at a "Celebration of Life" benefit concert tonight at LA's GREEK THEATRE. It will be livestreamed on TWITTER starting at 9:30 pm ET... NINA KRAVIZ played a two-hour techno set at the EIFFEL TOWER on Oct. 15 and you can watch it here... SPOTIFY is "forensically dissecting" THE MISEDUCATION OF LAURYN HILL in the just-launched fourth season of its great DISSECT podcast, hosted by COLE CUCHNA... Finally today, fittingly, we mourn the loss of HARDY FOX, the primary musical force behind the RESIDENTS and one of the inhabitants, therefore, of the greatest costumes in the history of rock. Like all his bandmates, Fox never officially revealed that it was he behind one of those giant eyeballs, but he should be remembered as an electronic pop pioneer, rock and roll prankster and visionary geek, in equal parts. In character to the end, he reported on his own demise a month before it happened ... RIP also BABA OJE, RICO J. PUNO and DIONISIO LIND. | | - Matty Karas, curator |
