Does sticking to sports now mean talking politics? What began with Trump calling any NFL players who kneeled "sons of bitches" became a full-on battle with the league. The image of dozens of NFL players kneeling during the anthem (and standing for GOD SAVE THE QUEEN) on a groggy Sunday morning from LONDON was a wake-up call. JAGUARS owner SHAD KHAN, a Trump voter and donor, stood arm-in-arm with players. (DOLPHINS safety MICHAEL THOMAS and REDSKINS cornerback JOSH NORMAN explain why they did it.) During TITANS-SEAHAWKS, even the anthem singer took a knee. Surreal doesn't begin to explain it. It was a historic day of player activism. Is this larger than the NFL having a moment? Will it continue? Does the NFL want to be in this position? The league has never been a bastion of liberalism. Its owners aren't, its infrastructure isn't player-friendly, and yet on Sunday it became a progressive cause célèbre. A mostly black league took on a president who has been accused of being a white supremacist and has continuously picked on black athletes. The NFL became a reason to talk about racism, freedom of speech, and police violence. For some fans, this might've been the first time they had the conversation in front of them and couldn't ignore it. Were the protests more remarkable because, unlike in the NBA, players are more replaceable, their jobs more unsure and have more reason to fear repercussion? Is sports the new venue for a culture war? Will there be repercussions? Will the NFL be able to handle a battle against Trump? Will fans get tired of politics in their sports? Will they stop watching? NASCAR owners said they'd fire drivers for protesting the anthem. The PENGUINS will go to the WHITE HOUSE. The WARRIORS had their invite revoked. Will the NBA pick up the torch when its season begins? LEBRON JAMES and STEVE KERR have set a tone; will it lead to more? Why is the anthem played before games? Will anyone sign COLIN KAEPERNICK? SportsSET: "Sports Takes a Knee"... The WNBA Finals didn't disappoint. A 28-2 SPARKS lead to start. An epic LYNX comeback. A game-winning dagger by CHELSEA GRAY with two seconds left.
