But... None of those teams is the CHICAGO CUBS. Not even the CLEVELAND INDIANS, who won their last series by defeating the BOSTON BRAVES a month before DEWEY didn't defeat TRUMAN, are the Chicago Cubs. (The CHICAGO TRIBUNE's BERNIE LINCICOME: "Cleveland easily wins the civic misery contest, but Chicago must accept the prize for dogged delusion.") So, yeah, cliché or no cliché, BILL MURRAY or HILLARY CLINTON, billy goat or STEVE BARTMAN, this is the one for baseball fans from ANCHORAGE to AUSTIN, from EDDIE VEDDER to JOHN CUSACK... This is also the one for Bartman, who has been largely silent for 13 years, who seems to have accepted his fate (and the jokes and the death threats) with quiet dignity, and who isn't asking for forgiveness or redemption but may get it anyway. Noting Bartman's refusal to peddle his story, make t-shirts or do a commercial like so many other insta-celebrities over the years, YAHOO's JEFF PASSAN calls him "the last man not to sell out" and urges the Cubs to have him throw out the first pitch when the Series gets to Chicago Friday night. The CHICAGO TRIBUNE's JOHN KASS makes the same request, writing, "I don't know if Steve Bartman needs this. But baseball needs it. And Cubs fans need it. Give Steve the ball." For the record, a longtime friend says Bartman wouldn't accept. Wherever he is, I hope he's rooting for his team and enjoying every minute of all this... ALEX RODRIGUEZ on TOM RICKETTS and THEO EPSTEIN... Ex-Cubs GM JIM HENDRY, who brought a winning tradition to Wrigley long before Epstein replaced him in 2011, deserves a share of the credit for the Cubs' October success...
