| rantnrave:// The UFC and CONOR MCGREGOR were both big winners Saturday night. UFC 205, the company's first event in NEW YORK since the state lifted a 20-year ban on mixed martial arts, made a record $17.7 million at the gate and was expecting record pay-per-view sales, too. Average ticket prices surpassed "HAMILTON," the ultimate gun duel that takes place 13 blocks away on BROADWAY every night. "JESUS is going to have to fight the devil to break that record," UFC president DANA WHITE said. The draw this time, besides UFC itself, was McGregor vs. EDDIE ALVAREZ for the lightweight belt. After he won it—making him the only fighter in UFC history to simultaneously own two belts—and before he left the building, McGregor took note of the gate and asked for a raise—and a piece of UFC itself. "You want me to stick around and help service that debt and continue to push the company?," he asked. "Bring me on board for real ... as an owner." Apparently unfazed by perhaps the first athlete in history to threaten his sport with its own debts, White said, "I’m going to let him enjoy this night and we’ll talk business later.” That's a fight they might not both get to win. Should be a good one, though. Call it UFC 205-1/2... Great LA TIMES profile of DIRECTV content chief DANIEL YORK, who the US JUSTICE DEPARTMENT says is the guy responsible for keeping the DODGERS off TV in most of LA. They mean it in the (allegedly) criminal way. As an LA resident who would like to see CLAYTON KERSHAW and COREY SEAGER on TV once in a while but not at the prices SPORTSNET LA is asking, I'm not sure York shouldn't be considered a hero... As a longtime liberal-leaning member of American mainstream media, soon to retire, white in color, long on tolerance, I get it. I’ve also had enough, thank you. At some point (Week 2 or 3 for me), the message became repetitive and annoying. | |
