| rantnrave:// Is the BASEBALL HALL OF FAME outmoded? FANGRAPHS' PAUL SWYDAN thinks the Hall isn't the best place to decide the sport's best players anymore. Everyone talks about who should get into the Hall but the Hall keeps finding ways to keep people out. PETE ROSE is banned. JOE MORGAN sent a letter last week on HoF stationery (if they still had stationery -- it was an email) trying to keep out steroid users. The letter was enough for YAHOO's JEFF PASSAN to drop his vote this year. MLB has long had a drug problem. Before there were steroids, there were greenies. Should we give lie detectors to players from the '50s, '60s, and '70s to find out who used amphetamines? Voters aren't perfect, passing on worthy players for inductions for a decade (TIM RAINES) or not inducting them at all (LOU WHITAKER). Analytics allows us to objectively separate the very good from the great. BONDS, CLEMENS, CHIPPER JONES, MANNY RAMIREZ should be in. What good is a museum if it ignores the history it's supposed to remember? Do they make history books excluding the parts people want to forget? Should human bias be a part of the selection process? The Hall isn't going to be displaced but it can still be improved... Universal rule in the NBA: if the star player and coach are beefing, the coach is gonna go. DAVID FIZDALE isn't the exception. MEMPHIS fired a coach who seemed safe in his job as almost as any in the league coming into this year. The GRIZZLIES chose to soothe MARC GASOL. Coaches aren't all interchangeable and Fizdale had done a good job, even if Memphis has lost eight straight. But it's easier to find another one than replace an All-Star center... How do you remember the athletes who never got to finish their careers—from ROBERTO CLEMENTE, who died helping earthquake survivors in NICARAGUA after notching his 3,000th hit, to HANK GATHERS, who collapsed on the court for LOYOLA MARYMOUNT, to SEAN TAYLOR, murdered in the middle of an All-Pro season with the WASHINGTON REDSKINS? Monday was the 10 year anniversary of Taylor's death and his absence still leaves a mark. He was killed at 24, young enough that he might still be playing today. He might've had to change his game -- conform to new rules that would've curtailed his big hits -- but he would be the end of a historic career. We love debating which baseball players deserve to be designated as the "best of all time." In the last year alone, I personally have written about Larry Walker's case to be regarded as one of them, as well as Andruw Jones's. Over at The Hardball Times, we publish a piece that explores this notion seemingly every month, sometimes more. | |
