| rantnrave:// Sometimes the minds of fans and pundits bring about crazy ideas, but this is not one of those. Come on NHL, listen to CRAIG CUSTANCE and add a play-in game for your playoffs. There’s nothing rivaling the intensity of a GAME 7, so starting the playoffs with something just like that would be amazing theater. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL adopted a wildcard game and that’s one of the best nights on their calendar now. The NHL should do the same – it’s too easy and too fun not to do and it would add more value to the bottom of the playoff seedings at the same time… The NFL is trying something different to add some interest in the PRO BOWL and this is one of the best ideas the league has had in years. The game itself will remain ignorable but dodgeball and skills competitions will be social media gold leading up to the SUPER BOWL. It’s a positive sign that the NFL is willing to embrace fun for once instead of its usual sourpuss pose. Let’s just hope we don’t have another ROBERT EDWARDS, though… Kudos to TEXAS for admitting the dangers of football and implementing a system that will hopefully protect its players by tracking concussions statewide. This could also provide a large enough data set so parents and researchers can track how prevalent concussions are. We still need more information on the concussion issue, even as the public grows wary of football… The best soccer player in the world pendulum has swung back to CRISTIANO RONALDO, and deservedly so after the boffo year he had. He won the BALLON D'OR over LIONEL MESSI. In 2016 Ronaldo has won the EUROS, the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE, and REAL MADRID sits atop LA LIGA this season… What's the point of hunting if you're going to shoot an elk from 1,180 yards away using your fancy auto-adjusting sniper rifle? There are hunters who love that they can bag kills from nearly anywhere but some purists wonder if it's ethical to be able to have such an advantage over the animals. But we know for sure that technology has disrupted another sport. | | - Mike Vorkunov, curator |

Cardell Hayes was found guilty of manslaughter in the killing of ex-New Orleans Saints star Will Smith after a series of minor traffic accidents and a street argument in April. The 29-year-old Hayes faces between 20-40 years in prison. He was also convicted of attempted manslaughter in the shooting of Smith’s wife, Racquel, which is worth up to 20 years. Expect Judge Camille Buras to hand down 40 years total at sentencing early next year.

F or media companies, 2016 was an Annus Horribilis - one marked by poor ratings and falling distribution. The leagues and TV networks have taken heed, and next year will be spent trying to win back those viewers. Here are my predictions on how the next 12 months will unfold.
